John Scot Barrowman , MBE (born March 11, 1967 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a British - American entertainer .
He studied performing arts in Great Britain and the USA and is mainly devoted to acting in (musical) theater and television, but also works as a singer , television presenter , author and comedian and privately as a human rights and animal rights activist . For entertainment purposes, he also dabbled as a figure skater, dancer and animal documentary filmmaker for British and Canadian children's television. 2011 his alma mater awarded RSAMD the experienced leading man , the honorary doctorate of the Faculty of Drama.
Barrowman gained international fame outside the theater scene since 2005 through his portrayal of Captain Jack Harkness in the British science fiction family series Doctor Who . Captain Jack, Rose and Sarah Jane are considered the most popular Companions (confidants of the Doctor ) in the 55-year history of the cult series . As a result, his character got its own internationally successful offshoot with Torchwood in four seasons, followed by a large number of radio plays, merchandise objects (play figures, clothing, etc.), comics , magazines and novels, some of which were penned by Barrowman and his sister Carole (* 1959), a professor of English and literature in Wisconsin . Since that role he has been almost omnipresent on British television; As the antagonist Malcolm Merlyn / "Dark Archer" he brought his growing international audience to the US series Arrow from 2012 .
Childhood and family
John Barrowman was born as the youngest son of Marion and John Barrowman in the Glasgow suburb of Mount Vernon. He has two older siblings, Andrew (* 1962) and Carole (* 1959). His father worked as an engineer for Caterpillar (construction machinery manufacturer) at its Scottish site in Uddingston . His mother sang voluntarily in the church choir of the small community and earned an extra income as an accountant in the local record store, where Barrowman regularly accompanied his mother as a primary school student and stood there on the counter to sing the hits of the week. When he was three years old, his family stayed in the United States for professional reasons for a year ( Caterpillar headquarters are in Illinois ), at the age of nine he emigrated permanently, accompanied by his grandmother Murn (Marion) Anderson the family. In Illinois they first lived in Aurora for a while, then moved to Joliet, a suburb of Chicago .
Barrowman generally speaks in public with a learned American accent (so-called General American ). In this way, he was able to escape the teasing of his new classmates after moving to the United States. However, he kept some specifically Scottish / British words, which is why his pronunciation is sometimes referred to as Mid-Atlantic accent . He continues to speak Scottish English with his family, with compatriots, or when in Scotland . His sister can jump back and forth between American and Scottish dialect just as easily . Together with her, he invented the term "bi-dialectical" for this in his autobiography; the expression diglossia , which is used in German linguistics, would be comparable . He describes his brother's accent as a mixture of Scottish-British and American accents, while his parents still speak pure Scottish. The five children and both of his siblings' grandchildren grow up as Americans; John and Carole speak American English with them .
Barrow Mans nephew Turner Barrowman Casey (Carole's younger child; * ~ 1989) is a stand-up - Comedian operate. 2015 he joined in his hometown of Minneapolis ( Minnesota together) with Collin Klug, Drew Janda and Robert Fones for comedy troupe Boy Kisses. Together they design sketch shows, give stand-up lectures and make short films. Boy Kisses was named “Artist of the Year” by City Pages in 2016. The Interrobang listed the group as "one of the top comedy shows in America" (one of the best comedy shows in America) .
Career as a performing artist
From 1987, Barrowman studied performing arts at the US International University in San Diego , California , and at times in his hometown of Glasgow at the renowned RSAMD (now RCS ). In his final semester he received during a field trip to the UK in 1989 at an audition the lead role of Billy Crocker in Cole Porter's musical Anything Goes alongside Elaine Paige OBE in London's Royal National Theater . With this role he made his breakthrough in the West End and the international theater scene - rather unusual for a twenty year old acting student . He then played in various musical roles as well as classical spoken theater, mainly in Great Britain but also in Washington, DC and on New York's Broadway , and was increasingly able to distinguish himself as a leading man . He has received roles in television productions and some feature films (including the 2004 Porter biopic De-Lovely and 2005 Mel Brooks ' staging of The Producers ), recorded several albums (both cast recordings for musicals and solo albums), hosted television shows and went on concert tours. In 2003 he returned to his Anything Goes role as Billy Crocker, this time at the even larger Theater Royal Drury Lane (West End).
Barrowman became known to an international audience apart from the theater scene in 2005 when he took on the role of Captain Jack Harkness in the British science fiction series Doctor Who . From October 2006 to 2011 he played the same role in Torchwood , an offshoot of Doctor Who located in the same series universe ( Whoniverse ) . In a two-part crossover of the two closely related series in 2008 and again in the New Year's Special in 2010 , Barrowman met Bernard Cribbins OBE again , who had become an important mentor for him during his beginnings in professional theater in 1989 with Elaine Paige . In 2008 his autobiography Anything Goes was published, which he wrote together with his sister Carole. A second book I Am What I Am was published in September 2009. In 2010 Barrowman was seen in five episodes of the dramedy series Desperate Housewives , in which he played the character of Patrick Logan. The short appearance in the popular US American show also served to prepare the fourth and, for the time being, last television season of Torchwood , which was filmed for the first time in California as a co-production of the BBC with the US broadcaster Starz . Shortly after filming, showrunner Russell T Davies retired from the film industry for over two years to take care of his terminally ill husband. The TV series Torchwood was put on hold by the BBC, but since then a large number of sequels have been made in other media (novels, comic books, radio plays).
In 2013, Barrowman (as well as Davies) indirectly returned to Doctor Who when Peter Davison shot a half-hour short film called The Five (ish) Doctors Reboot with the help of many former contributors . The comedy special was part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the series' first broadcast on November 23, 1963; the title ties in with the official anniversary film for the 20th anniversary of the series ( The Five Doctors , 1983, also with Davison in the lead role). Everyone involved played self-deprecating parodies of themselves in the short film; Davison's daughter Georgia Tennant took over the production . With the help of Barrowman, David and Georgia Tennant, Paul McGann , Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman , Davison, Sylvester McCoy , Colin Baker and Russell T Davies try in vain to get a role in the production of the anniversary film Doctor's Day , no matter how small . To do this, they break into the BBC film studios in Cardiff, among other things. Davison, McCoy and Baker reveal in a dramatic sequence along the way that Barrowman has secretly a wife and two daughters in London. The frustrated father then flees with the three former doctoral actors to the filming location in Cardiff. The Five (ish) Doctors Reboot was nominated for a Hugo Award for best short film the following year .
In the first five seasons of the DC series Arrow he was seen as the antagonist Malcolm Merlyn from 2012 to 2017. Merlyn - also called "Dark Archer" andالساحرknown - constant adversary of the main character Oliver "The Arrow" Queen (played by Stephen Amell ). From the third season, Barrowman was part of the main cast. With Doctor Who , Torchwood and Arrow he secures several appearances every year at various international science fiction and fantasy conventions such as the SDCC (world's largest comic con), its approximately 50 US offshoots and its German equivalent in Stuttgart, as well many more fan expos in Canada, the USA, Great Britain and mainland Europe. Initially, these appearances were framed in autograph and photo operations as well as group panels (a kind of question time for fans) of the respective TV show, but after a short time Barrowman also received more solo panels, which he used for improvised entertainment beyond the interview atmosphere -Show repurposed, songs and anecdotes for the best.
Since his breakthrough in the television industry with Doctor Who / Torchwood and Dancing on Ice in 2005, Barrowman has taken fewer theater roles. Since most of the entertainer's projects (filming, concerts) take up less time in the winter months, he has since limited his theater contracts to Panto (annual comedy musicals for young families from November to February), where he has been working alongside the Krankies for over ten years ( Scottish comedy duo since the 1970s) is a constant. Although he still has a deep connection, especially to the big musicals, this activity does not allow any private life over a long period of employment. Among the eight or more appearances per week, the times of which should of course overlap as little as possible with the working hours of other professions, social contact with friends and family suffers in particular. The abundance of offers currently gives him the opportunity and necessity to choose among good alternatives, but he can certainly imagine returning to the theater stage in the foreseeable future. He fulfilled this wish in 2009 when he had the opportunity to return to London's West End for only eleven weeks (so-called strictly limited run ) in the role of Zaza ( La Cage aux Folles ). The contract followed almost immediately after his second concert tour and the publication of his second book I Am What I Am and came in between the shooting of Torchwood and Tonight's the Night and his panto appearances as Robin Hood in Cardiff at the turn of the year.
Frequent comments from journalists, friends and colleagues that the Panto family theater is “beneath its dignity as a versatile professional actor” is reminiscent of “that even Shakespeare was not too bad for himself , with gender swaps, mix-ups and the theatricality of fools and dudes fooling around ". In this context, he emphasized the panto scripts of the dramaturge Paul Elliot, whose "unique talent to address nostalgic mothers, fathers, grandparents, uncles and aunts [as well as] the wide range of children and young people with clever theater knowledge and skilful bon motes" , he is largely responsible for the success of the shows. He counters the view that Panto in general is cheesy and outdated: “I challenge you to look at one of my Pantos and not have fun with it. Completely impossible. ”Audiences and theater critics agree that his performances are regularly sold out months in advance. Most recently he appeared as Dick Whittington at the Manchester Opera House .
In the same way, he justifies his participation in the reality show Dancing on Ice . Immediately after his international breakthrough in front of the camera with Doctor Who and in view of a large number of roles being offered, his decision to participate mainly resulted in incomprehension from his peers. As in Germany, reality shows in Great Britain do not usually have the reputation of being a testament to great acting or any other quality - those who have better offers usually avoid them - but on the one hand, Barrowman saw “actual entertainment value without the usual in the sports program Dancing on Ice sneaky gossip of the participants on each other ”and on the other hand the unique opportunity to learn the basics of figure skating personally from the multiple world and Olympic champions in pair skating, Torvill & Dean . During the participation he repeatedly emphasized the high fun and learning factor of this program for him personally and only complained about the repeated efforts of some print media to create or fabricate an artificial dispute between the participants.
Barrowman is known to be moved to almost any activity that sees entertainment value for his audience. The only role he publicly regretted so far was one of the main roles in Shark Attack III: Megalodon . In an interview with Jonathan Ross , he admitted that he accepted the role in 2002 out of sheer financial difficulties. After Ross showed the audience a short video clip, Barrowman confirmed the script was "terrible" and could not bring himself to call the leading actress a colleague ("the ... the female ... who was ... I was acting opposite"). Various scenes in the film became an internet phenomenon due to the unconvincing special effects, the strong fluctuations in size of the poorly animated shark and the sometimes bizarre dialogues. In circles of B-movie fans , the film achieved a certain cult status due to its involuntary comedy (a short video excerpt from the scene of a shark attack has already been viewed well over 50 million times on YouTube). A sentence that was completely improvised by Barrowman became particularly popular and, according to him, was never intended for the finished film. The director David Worth asked him to use an improvisation to elicit a facial movement from his counterpart Jenny McShane. Believing that the sentence would definitely be cut out later, Barrowman then said very matter-of-factly and off the cuff: “I'm really wired. What do you say I take you home and eat your pussy? ”The hoped-for reaction did not materialize, but the director decided to keep the sentence in the film and used it as a transition to a sex scene between the two characters that had already been filmed. Barrowman only found out about this when he later watched the film with his young nieces and nephews. For a later television broadcast, some parts of the dialogue had to be resynchronized in order to avoid censorship. Barrowman's infamous improvisation turned into a proposal to go home and watch a movie together, which made no difference to McShane's reaction. The original sentence was included in the 2012 list of the 50 Greatest Improvised Movie Scenes by the British film magazine Total Film : who needs a script anyway? ( The 50 best improvised movie scenes: Who needs a script? ) Recorded.
On July 5, 2011, the RSAMD in Glasgow awarded him an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Drama - combined with an invitation to occasionally lead master's courses in drama at the renowned university.
Career as an author
Almost all of Barrowman's books were published in collaboration with his sister Carole Emily Barrowman (born April 20, 1959). She is a professor of English and literary studies in Milwaukee ( Wisconsin , USA ) and in this role she also heads the creative writing department at Alverno College, a private art school under Roman Catholic sponsorship. It is also for the Milwaukee Sentinel and other local newspapers as a literary critic and crime - Columnist active. In 2011, the anthology Chicks Dig Timelords , to which she contributed as a co-author, won the Hugo Award for Best Related Work . She collected and structured her brother's notes and worked with him to design the two memoirs Anything Goes (2008) and I Am What I Am (2009). The book titles come from the songs Anything Goes from Cole Porter 's musical of the same name and I Am What I Am from Jerry Herman's La Cage aux Folles - Barrowman played a leading role in both pieces ( AG 1989 & 2002/2003; La Cage 2009). The individual book chapters also bear the names of musical numbers and other thematically appropriate songs.
The Barrowman siblings' first published fictional work was a Torchwood comic strip titled Captain Jack and the Selkie . Commenting on the captain's portrayal in the comic, John said, “We had agreed to tell a story that would explore previously undiscovered aspects of Jack's character and life story. I wanted to give the fans something new about Jack. "
On 2 February 2012 (UK) the siblings took over the Buster Books publishing his first fantasy - novel for children and young people with the name Hollow Earth ( Hollow Earth ) on the market. The main target group are 10–12 year olds, so it is mid-grade fiction . The novel is about the twins Matt and Emily "Em" Calder, who, as so-called animars, are able to bring art to life through their imagination and to travel through space and time via works of art. Through this ability, they summon powerful antagonists who want to open the gate to Hollow Earth, a kind of underworld into which many monsters and demons were banished.
Hollow Earth became the first part of a trilogy, followed by The Bone Quill (2013, German title Hohle Erde: beinfeder , 2014) and The Book of Beasts (2014). In 2016, Conjuror , the first novel in a new series ( The Orion Chronicles ), was published, set in the same world as Hollow Earth and based on the adventures of the twins. These are again among the protagonists, but the real main character is now the deaf Afro-American refugee Remy, who belongs to the conjuror family ( magicians , pocket players ) and can use music rather than works of art to change reality. On March 10, 2017, Conjuror was recognized by Nudge Books with the Book of the Year Award in the Book Geek category as Book of the Year.
2013 they released next to The Bone Quill also the novel Exodus Code , which again in Torchwood - universe is located. Building on this, the comic novels Welt ohne Ende and Station Null followed (both in 2017), and a third volume has been announced for June 2018. In 2017, the second part of the Orion Chronicles appeared with Nephilim . Translations into German are already available for the Hollow Earth series and the Torchwood comic books.
On August 9, 2018, the third part of the Orion Chronicles appeared in the United Kingdom under the title Inquisitor . In the USA and other countries, the publication will follow in October 2018. For 2018, the start of a new comic book series for Legendary Comics with the title Cursed has been announced.
Private life
1993 John Barrowman met his current husband, the British architect Scott Gill (born April 2, 1963), after a performance of Patrick Hamilton's Rope at the Chichester Theater Festival . The couple lives alternately in London ( England ), Sully ( Cardiff , Wales ) and Palm Springs ( California ). As part of their move to California, they brought Barrowman's parents from Florida to live in Palm Springs. Gill's family continues to live in England. On December 27, 2006, they signed the contract for a registered partnership in Wales , but the first seal of their life alliance is the fact that they took out their first joint loan twelve years earlier. Immediately after the re-legalization in California , the two married there on July 2, 2013. With the marriage, Gill finally received a permanent residence permit in the United States through Barrowman's dual citizenship after twenty years, while he had previously had to return regularly to Great Britain due to visas.
social commitment
Barrowman repeatedly calls on his fans for donations and support for his aid projects, with a particular focus on supporting transsexual young people in foster families and training signal dogs for deaf people. In addition to Stonewall and the Human Rights Campaign , he is particularly committed to the BBC Children's Fund Children In Need and the animal welfare organization Dogs Trust , which have been devoted to abused, neglected and stray dogs since 1891 and, among other things ,. a. for slogans like "A Dog is for Life, not just for Christmas" ( a dog is for life, not just for Christmas ) is known. In the USA and Scotland he also supported various projects for the homeless and for people with Down syndrome .
For the Trans Youth Equality Foundation ( Foundation for Equality of Trans Youth ) Barrowman started the day before his 50th birthday (March 10, 2017) media attention, a T-shirt campaign. The clothes, offered on the website Represent.com, created for this purpose, featured a modified toilet sign (a mixture of the typically male and female figure) that read "It Was Never About the Bathrooms" ( it was never really about them Toilets ). The phrase refers to the ongoing debate about the use of public toilets by trans people. In the United States, bills were temporarily put in place banning trans men and women from using the toilet of their choice and requiring them to choose the gender indicated on their birth certificate. The charity - crowdfunding platform Represent (usually a few days or weeks) designed for limited short-term campaigns. The selection of garments is limited to a few basic colors and standard cuts in order to save material and production costs. The Bathroom campaign comprised six different tops (shirts and sweaters) with no color selection, the background color was black. All proceeds (about $ 20,000) went directly to the foundation. Barrowman had previously used Represent.com's services. In spring 2015, for example, he launched his own, somewhat more extensive collection for the benefit of the NOH8 Campaign ( no hate = no hate ), which sold 2,482 times. He later began offering fan merchandise through the site outside of these fundraising campaigns.
The social media , he also uses to make American US in particular his fans to grievances around him carefully and if necessary to help prompt. Most recently, on the evening of April 5, 2018, he denounced the way the popular US retail chain Target dealt with a homeless customer. Barrowman had tried in a store in WeHo ( LA ) to buy the man various items of clothing and a voucher for further purchases, but this was prohibited by the staff, citing company guidelines. Within minutes, Barrowman's video was viewed, shared, and commented on hundreds of thousands of times on Twitter and Facebook . Less than five hours after he publicly vented his anger, Target responded on Twitter with a public apology and assurances that such a company policy did not exist and that branch staff had been contacted immediately. This did not go far enough for Barrowman, he suggested that the company give a visible positive example as a reaction to the misconduct and as a sign of goodwill and, for example, make a generous donation to one of the leading local or nationwide homeless aid organizations. The case made waves in the national and international press. On May 16, 2018, Barrowman took up the topic again and started a campaign again on Represent.com in which he wore clothing with the imprint "Target homelessness, not the homeless" (one in California and one in the UK) for the benefit of two homeless organizations. tackle homelessness, not the homeless ).
A special heart project is the LGBT Sanctuary Palm Springs ( sanctuary = place of refuge ). The volunteer-run accommodation in his adopted Californian home wants to offer young adults a home after they have dropped out of state youth welfare due to old age. 18 to 21-year-olds who have previously lived in foster families or homes receive a room in a shared apartment, a wide range of courses and support with training and job finding, the first tax return and other difficulties in transitioning to adult life. The project is particularly aimed at LGBTQ youth who ended up in state welfare after their parents rejected them. Twenty percent of such youths become homeless in Riverside County when state welfare stops working. The proportion of homeless LGBT youth (20%) is twice as high as the proportion of LGBT youth in the total US population in this age group (10%). 26% of all LGBT young people describe a lack of acceptance in school and at home as their biggest problem. The NPO wants to change these sad statistics in the long term. Planning began in 2014, in 2016 the first house with hostel capacities for six young people opened at the same time, extensions followed and at the end of 2017 a second house, financed entirely by donations, was added, built by the residents and voluntary helpers.
Barrowman regards it as his life's task to show gay couples a possible way of life and to give an authentic example of a functioning, natural love relationship and lifelong bond between two men. To this end, he talks and writes openly and honestly about the ups and downs of his marriage on a variety of occasions and uses video functions on social media ( TwitCast , FacebookLive, etc.) to document everyday situations in his private and professional life and to answer questions from his fans in real time. Like Sir Ian McKellen before him, his career also bears testimony to the fact that a successful career in the public eye is also possible without ever denying identity and private life. In his book I Am What I Am he describes his motivation and intention as follows:
“ We live in a world where there is some kind of generally accepted story about how non-homosexual couples should live and behave. Even if this story can be full of stereotypes and clichés - keyword: 'The woman is responsible for the house and the children; the husband for the finances and the lawn '- after all, there is such a template. And this one is full of anecdotes and advice on how to guide and support straight couples. Women may be from Venus and men from Mars, but at least there are books and articles and talk shows and countless country songs describing it in the heterosexual couple's solar system. They also have mothers and aunts and grandmas who will safely take a married son or daughter aside, give them a verbal pat on the back of the head, and tell them to pull themselves together.
Many gay couples' families are far too busy coming to terms with their child's identity to comment on their son (or partner's) relationship and workload. In addition, since many parents of gay men are not gay themselves, there is a real fear of the unknown that makes these types of conversations even more difficult. In my family, we are fortunate that since my relationship with Scott we have been as visible in our family's lives as my siblings and their partners. This means, for example, that Clare and Turner have known little else in their lives than Uncle John and Uncle Scott as a couple, and they see few fundamental differences between us in this role and their parents. They saw how we argue and quarrel, yell and scream, laugh and kiss and make up again. They know [...] how much we love each of them - and how much we love one another. Carole and Kevin, Andrew and Dot, Scott and I, Mom and Dad are all as different as couples in a family can be, and yet we are absolutely alike. In every partnership we continuously work on the balance and the decisions that keep the relationship alive.
Few chapters of history for gay men and women have been written so far, and as a gay man I have made the conscious decision that I want to be part of their design. Given my visibility in the media and the arts, I believe I have a responsibility to assume [. I can] help other gay men see what is possible in their own life, or even what is possible in the life of their brothers and sons. Even if the distribution of roles in our relationship is not always as clearly defined as we would like it to be ... In what relationship is it really - given the superficial stereotypes and false perceptions of what it means to be in a relationship ( gay or not), left behind? "
In addition to this long-term commitment, Barrowman regularly draws attention to current emergency situations and asks his approximately 2.5 million viewers on social media for support, for example after the devastating floods in south Texas. Politically, he positions himself clearly and, like his husband, criticizes openly the way the US state and federal governments and the British government deal with refugees, immigration, national (social )ist / racist movements and members of the LGBT * community.
When Gill jokingly gave him an NRA membership based on his television roles in 2013 , Barrowman encouraged his American fans for a while to subvert the lobby together in order to influence their decisions in favor of stricter gun laws from within.
After the massacre in Orlando in 2016 , the couple looked for different ways to come to terms with the tragedy and to help those affected. They mainly supported the One Orlando Fund established by the city , which donated 100% of the collected donations directly to the injured, eyewitnesses and relatives of the dead. A total of 31.67 million dollars were distributed to 308 families. In aid of the fund, for example, the song and benefit video "Holy" by the Catholic musician Danielle LoPresti was released, for which Barrowman and Gill were filmed as one of eleven married couples portrayed. Barrowman also had a speaking role in the video along with LoPresti and fellow actor Anna Khaja. There was no script or other specifications for the resulting dialogues. The nine-minute video thematizes the Judeo-Christian discussion of (homosexual) love in the Bible and closes with a quote from Romans 13:10 : "Love is the fulfilling of the law".

Solo shows
Almost all of Barrowman's appearances as a solo entertainer contain both comedic and narrative as well as musical elements. In his solo panels, in addition to the stand-up parts and answering the audience's questions, he always devotes the last minutes to the performance of a song, while the appearances during his concert tours usually consist of songs and anecdotes in roughly equal proportions, often accompanied by photos and videos from his private collection.

Radio plays and audio books
Big Finish published as an official partner of the BBC at regular intervals audio books and radio plays on various science fiction series, in particular from the Doctor Who - universe . These are usually spoken by the original cast of the program in question. Barrowman has already been part of the full-cast productions several times in his star role as Captain Jack Harkness ( above all for various Torchwood radio play series) and also the sole spokesman for some of the company's audio books . Also BBC Radio 4 took since the premiere of the TV series to a series of radio plays with the original cast. Over the years, a number of Torchwood novels were published, the audio book versions of which were also read by various actors from the original series. The first novel to be published in audio book form was Torchwood: Another Life by Peter Anghelides (2007, published in German in 2011 as Another Life ). This was read out in abbreviated form by Barrowman. In total, he has worked on 34 audio book and radio play productions so far.
