StreetDance Kids - Together we are stars (original title: All Stars ) is a British dance film from 2013 and a continuation of the 3D dance film series StreetDance with its predecessors StreetDance 3D and StreetDance 2 . For various reasons, some young people are banding together to prevent their youth center from being demolished to make way for parking spaces.

action

The student Ethan is quick-witted and clever that he suffers from the fact that his parents are separated, you can not tell by looking at him. His schoolmate Jaden, on the other hand, is reserved and often dreams to himself. Not only is he an enthusiastic, but also an outstanding break dancer who dreams of dancing day and night. His problem is that his parents put more emphasis on his education and have forbidden him from dancing.

The youth center “The Old Garage” is a meeting point for young people, a place where they can be themselves without any pressure to perform. Now, however, the center is to be demolished to make way for the construction of parking lots. Jaden sees his last chance to have a place where he can dance undisturbed. At the same time, Ethane has a bigger problem too. Since he has fallen in love with a new classmate named Lucy, he challenges her boyfriend Kurt and his excellent street dance crew to impress Lucy. However, Ethan is quite untrained in dancing and is now faced with the task of having to put together his own troupe in order to survive in the competition. Since both Jaden and Ethan share a common goal, they team up to organize a fundraiser. Jaden hopes that this will raise the necessary money to avert the demolition of the youth center, but Ethan needs Jaden's help for his plan to put together a troop that will not be embarrassed in the upcoming battle. The kids who introduce themselves, however, are not exactly talented, good street dancers seem to be few and far between. In the end, the martial artist Amy, who has long been secretly in love with Ethan, the siblings Tim and Rebecca, who appear in standard dance competitions, and the somewhat chubby Brian. Jaden, who does not want to dance because of his parents' ban, now has the thankless task of making Ethan, Amy, Tim, Rebecca and Brian dancers who can hold their own in front of an audience. He quickly realizes that this is more difficult than he thought and so the demand is again in the room that he must dance along, without him it would be nothing. After Jaden went to his older friend Mark, with whom he used to dance, to get advice, things are actually getting a little better from day to day, the group is slowly growing together.

Then, however, Ethan clashes with Kurt, who scornfully lets him know that nobody likes Ethan, not even his father, who has left him. This remark throws Ethan completely off track, as he is suffering from the separation of his parents anyway and cannot get rid of the feeling that his father is not really interested in him. So he throws everything down and withdraws.

However, the kids quickly realize that they miss each other and get back together again. Although the commitment to “The Old Garage” now seems in vain, they don't give up and advertise their show. Only Jaden doesn't want to take part anymore because he is of the opinion that he has disappointed his parents enough already. On the day of the demolition, the show continues, even if the demolition company tries to put pressure on those present. First, Kurt and his street dance crew perform and deliver an excellent performance that is enthusiastically applauded. Then the moment will come when the old garage kids have to show what they can do. Fortunately for her, Jaden, who is indispensable for her, shows up at the very last minute. The kids dance enthusiastically, carried away by a towering jade. Roaring, never-ending applause is their reward.

Not through the money raised, but also the public interest accompanying the event ensure that “The Old Garage” is still available to the kids. Ethan also found that Amy suits him a lot better and also made peace with his father, who was just as much in the audience as Jaden's parents.

criticism

On Rotten Tomatoes , the film received a positive rating of 57%, in the target group of 62%.

Andreas Staben from the Filmstarts editorial team was of the opinion that in the dance film "sequels are as often as usual only in the horror genre and here and there the supposed sequels often have little to do with their predecessors". Unmistakably, one aims “quite unabashedly at the obvious commercial advantages of an established 'brand'”. In the original, the film bears the simple title 'All Stars' , "which removes the clear classification, but which has been restored in this country for no compelling substantive reason". Finally, it said: “ 'StreetDance Kids' is perhaps a rarity as a dance film that is primarily aimed at ten- to 15-year-olds, but otherwise it is with its formulaic plot, the woodcut-like figures and the (too) few brisk choreographies are a typical representative of the genre. "

kino.de found that the third film "of the British B-Boying franchise [focuses] on a younger audience and the fun aspect of breaking, krumping and locking". "The connecting link in all 'street dance' films [is] the 14-year-old power rogue and exceptional breaker Akai Osei-Mansfield, who after supporting roles in the previous films is now the focus.

"Even if the audience will find the story a bit predictable, Streetdance Kids still manages to make the individual sections interesting, as well as to offer a comprehensive presentation of dance talents and to combine children's film entertainment with a realistic social representation."

- RantBit

“And another series of which cheap films are so financially worthwhile for the makers that there will probably be a number of sequels to follow. Dilettantism is very important here in every respect: the story has been seen a thousand times in a similar way, the kids play badly, dance in bad choreography, which, to make matters worse, was badly staged. Actually a real horror film! "
