The Durovis Dive are VR glasses for smartphones . It consists of a plastic frame with adjustable lenses , into which a smartphone can be inserted, and a head tracking algorithm so that the movements of the head are displayed smoothly in side-by-side 3D applications.

development

Inspired by the discussions in the Meant to be Seen 3D forum and the announcement of the Oculus Rift , the computer scientist Stefan Welker began developing it based on his experience in robot football .

The first published project was the OpenDive, a glasses frame that can be made on a 3D printer. The stl file is open source , the lenses and a headband must be obtained separately.

The first game for the dive was the version of Quake II , which allowed a display in side-by-side 3D. It can work with a Bluetooth - game controllers are played.

hardware

Smartphones with a screen diagonal of up to 5 inches fit into the Dive (maximum width of the smartphone: 72 mm). A separate frame is included with the device for iPhones. The lenses can be adjusted to the eye relief of any wearer (even for myopic people up to a few dioptres ). Depending on the smartphone used, a field of view of approx. 85 ° horizontally (90 ° diagonally) can be achieved. The head tracking (tracking the head movements and outputting the movements in the game) runs at approx. 100 to 250 Hz. All computing power is provided by the smartphone.

Compatibility with current smartphones

The device must have a gyroscope and an accelerometer. A non-exhaustive list of common smartphones and the assessment of their compatibility:
