The Theater Royal, Drury Lane is a theater on Drury Lane in London's West End .

history

The first building on this site was built after the restoration. Opened in 1663, it was used by Thomas Killigrew's drama troupe as one of the two theaters with a royal patent (see Patent Theater ). After this building burned down in 1672, a new one was built according to plans by Christopher Wren and opened in 1674. The theater flourished in the mid-18th century with the leadership of Colley Cibber and his future manager and lead actor David Garrick , who counted on popular actresses such as Kitty Clive . In 1773 the theater was the place of work of Richard Brinsley Sheridan ,Thomas Linley senior and Thomas Linley junior .

Because this building no longer met the requirements in the course of the 18th century, it was demolished in 1791 and a new one built according to plans by Henry Holland , which was used from 1794, but after only ten years on February 24, 1809, again down to the foundation walls burned down.

The current theater building, which seats around 2,200 people, was inaugurated in 1812. In the 1830s, the house presented animal shows by well-known trainers , such as the big cat demonstrations by the French horse rider and animal showman Henri Martin in 1833, or the American Isaac van Amburgh , whose performances the young Queen Victoria visited several times in 1839 . In 1847 the management of Drury Lane was entrusted to the famous and eccentric orchestra leader and French composer of dance music Louis-Antoine Jullien (1812-1860). In 1847 he invited Hector Berlioz to conduct the orchestra.

The official address today is Catherine Street, a street parallel to Drury Lane.

After the Second World War in the theater numerous West End premieres found by Rodgers and Hammerstein - musicals instead: Oklahoma! (1946), South Pacific (1951) and The King and I (1953). Another successful US import was the musical My Fair Lady by Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner , which was played from April 30, 1958 for five years.

Since the mid-1980s, the house has been home to major musical productions such as 42nd Street , Miss Saigon and Oliver!
