Thomas Linley senior

Thomas Linley senior (born January 17, 1733 in Wells , Somerset , † November 19, 1795 ) was an English musician and stage composer.

Life

Thomas Linley studied organ at Bath Abbey with Thomas Chilcot and worked as a music teacher in Bath . He played an important role in Bath's musical life, including organizing oratorio concerts. From 1776 he was musical director and co-owner of the Drury Lane Theater in London for fifteen years . In 1777 he became a member of the Royal Society of Musicians.

He and his wife, Mary Johnson, had twelve children, seven of whom had musical careers, the most famous being his son Thomas Linley Jr. The daughters Elizabeth Ann (* 1754), Mary (* 1758) and Maria (* 1763) were singers and actresses who were noted in their early adolescence; his son Samuel (* 1760) was a talented oboist , but then went to sea. Thomas Linley junior played violin concertos at the age of seven and soon became a recognized composer.

Only three of his children survived. Thomas Linley senior died in London in November 1795 after financial and health problems.
