Life

Mozart and Linley with the Gavard des Pivets family in Florence, 1770

Thomas Linley was the son of harpsichordist, composer and singing teacher Thomas Linley senior . He was already playing violin concertos at the age of 7 and was already an experienced composer before going to Italy to study with Pietro Nardini . In Florence he met the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among others .

He returned to London in 1771 and quickly became a leading figure in London's musical life. Thanks to his father's position with the orchestra of the Theater Royal Drury Lane (1773), which also became its co-owner and musical director from 1774, he had numerous opportunities to perform as a concertmaster and violinist and was able to perform compositions.

In the following years Linley wrote highly regarded works, including an Anthem for the Three Choirs Festival ('Let God arise'), the oratorio The Song of Moses and the most important choral work, the Lyric Ode of the Fairies, Aerial Beings and Witches (Shakespeare Ode) .

In 1775 he achieved the greatest success of his short life when he composed most of the music for the piece The Duenna by his brother-in-law Richard Brinsley Sheridan , which had 75 performances in its first season.

Thomas linley jr. drowned on a boat trip at the age of 22 and was buried in Edenham Church , Lincolnshire.
