action

The fifth doctor and his companions, Vislor Turlough and Tegan Jovanka, enjoy the tranquility of a planet called the Eye of Orion . There the doctor suffers several attacks of weakness. These are explained by extracting his previous incarnations from their respective timelines.

The first doctor is walking through a park when suddenly an object approaches him from the sky that pulls him out of his time. The now retired Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart is about to give a speech at UNIT headquarters when the second doctor arrives and greets him happily. The two take a short walk and indulge in memories when the unknown object approaches them too and they are torn out of time. The third doctor tries to escape the object following him in his car, but he does not succeed. The fourth doctor and Romana enjoy a leisurely boat ride when they too are swept away by the object, but something doesn't seem to be working as it was with the other kidnapping victims. While these materialized as small characters on the home planet of Doctor Gallifrey , this does not happen with the fourth Doctor and his companion.

In addition to the doctor's earlier incarnations, his granddaughter Susan Foreman and his former companion Sarah Jane Smith are also kidnapped from their timelines.

The fifth doctor finally collapses in the TARDIS . Vislor and Tegan are at a loss and notice that the TARDIS has landed somewhere, but gives no information about where and when. It is also bound by a force field without being able to detach.

Meanwhile, the Colons of the Gallifrey High Council - President Borusa, Chancellor Flavia and the Castellan - receive the Master. Despite his past, they offer him a new regeneration cycle if he saves the doctor's life. Apparently the high council knows about the kidnappings. They teach the Master that the death zone, located in the center of the planet, has been reactivated and is now drawing energy from the Eye of Harmony, which endangers Gallifrey's safety. So far no Time Lord has been able to return from the death zone. When you wanted to hire the doctor, you had to find out that he no longer exists in any of his previous incarnations. They suspect that he is in the death zone, as several timelines converge there.

The first doctor wanders through a labyrinth of corridors and meets his granddaughter Susan. Suddenly a Dalek appears, which leads the two to assume that they are on Skaro. They flee until they reach a dead end. They manage to lure the Dalek into a corner where he is incapacitated by his own shots. One of the walls is also destroyed and the doctor and Susan see the Tower of Darkness, in the center of Gallifrey's death zone. You are sure to get answers there and you are on your way.

The second doctor and the brigadier wander through the barren, rocky landscape of the death zone. Suddenly they are confronted with some cybermen. For now, they manage to escape. Shortly afterwards, the Tower of Darkness can be seen in the distance, which confirms the second doctor's premonitions. He reports to the Brigadier of Rassilon, the most powerful and cruel of all Time Lords, whose grave is in the tower.

Meanwhile, the third doctor and Sarah Jane meet in the rough terrain of the death zone and also go to the tower.

The fifth doctor comes to in the TARDIS. Meanwhile, the first doctor and Susan discover the TARDIS. The reunion is very confusing for everyone, but they draw hope. The first doctor wants to send out a signal to call the other incarnations and wait for them. The fifth doctor, however, wants to go to the Tower of Darkness to prevent someone from conjuring up and abusing the power of the great Rassilon.

Meanwhile, the master receives the seal of the high council to convince the doctor of his good intentions. He also receives a device that gives the high council the opportunity to get him back out of the death zone. The master is trans-materialized into the death zone by means of an atomic-powered transformer and shortly afterwards meets the third doctor and Sarah Jane. The doctor distrusts his archenemy, so they are shot at with radiation weapons. The master escapes, the doctor's car is hit and no longer works, whereupon the doctor and Sarah Jane have to continue on foot. But they too soon notice some cybermen.

In the TARDIS, it is agreed that the fifth doctor will try to get into the tower with Susan and Tegan, while the first doctor will continue to send the signal to find the other doctors. If they are all discovered, the TARDIS is supposed to materialize in the Tower of Darkness.

On their way to the tower, the doctor, Tegan and Susan meet the master who tries to convince the fifth doctor of his good intentions. They are observed by a cyberman who informs his group immediately. You want to capture the time traveler. Tegan and Susan flee to the TARDIS while the Doctor and Master stay together. The master is hit, the doctor takes the signal device, activates it and materializes in the hall of the high council. There the doctor speculates that the forbidden time expander was used to bring the various incarnations as well as the Cybermen and the Dalek to Gallifrey, which would mean that a high-ranking Time Lord must be behind it. In the signaling device, the doctor discovers a tracking device that tells the cybermen the position of the master and thus that of the doctor. Since the master received the signaling device from the castellan, this is now under general suspicion. President Borusa orders his office to be searched.

Tegan and Susan report to the TARDIS, whereupon the first doctor decides to go to the Tower of Darkness. Tegan accompanies him. Meanwhile, the master tries to get the Cybermen on his side and incites them against the Time Lords. He wants to lead her to the Tower of Darkness. Vislor and Susan are monitoring the Doctor and Tegan's path in the TARDIS when they suddenly hear noises outside the TARDIS. On the monitor they see Cybermen who are now trying to open the TARDIS.

The second doctor and the brigadier are meanwhile in the rocky labyrinth below the Tower of Darkness and are looking for access to the inside of the tower. There they are confronted with a yeti robot that they know well. You can scare him away and enter the tower through the underground cave entrance.

Meanwhile, the third doctor and Sarah Jane have to deal with a Raston fighting robot. They manage to make the combat robot aware of the Cybermen, whereupon a fight breaks out between them. They take the opportunity and equip themselves with mountaineering equipment, which they discover in the cave of the combat robot. You must now get to the top of the tower. In a daring action they succeed in this and they enter the tower.

Evidence can be found in the castellan's office that he was behind what went on in the death zone. President Borusa orders a test of conscience to be taken, which is why the castellan panics. Shortly afterwards, he is shot dead by the guard commander for drawing a gun. The doctor wants to return to the death zone to help the others, but Borusa insists that the doctor replace the castellan on the high council from now on. However, the doctor is still suspicious.

Meanwhile the first doctor and Tegan have reached the main entrance of the tower. You enter the structure and have to cross a field that is charged with electrical lightning. A death trap that can hardly be overcome. Then the master enters the tower and warns the doctor and Tegan about the cybermen. The two hide and the master sends his supposed allies across the field of death. Except for the cyber leader, these will be destroyed. The master then puts this out of action and tells the doctor and Tegan how to cross the field.

The first and third doctor, Tegan and Sarah Jane enter the tomb of Rassilon, shortly afterwards the second doctor and the brigadier arrive. The three doctors decipher an old inscription that says that whoever has come this far and puts the ring of Rassilon on his finger will receive eternal life. The master was just waiting for this information. Angry that none of the doctors let him help him, he now wants to achieve immortality, but first kill the doctors. The brigadier prevents this with a powerful blow that puts the master out of action.

Meanwhile, the Cybermen have attached a bomb to the TARDIS to blow it up. Susan and Turlogh finish their lives, but shortly before the explosion, the TARDIS dematerializes as the doctors in the tower deactivated the force field. The ship materializes inside the tomb.

When the fifth doctor wanted to see the president, he disappeared. Since the transformer was not used, the doctor suspects a secret door. He quickly discovered the secret of a painting in which the legendary Rassilon plays the harp from a sheet of music. The doctor plays the notes and a door actually opens. He enters a control room from which the time expander was apparently operated. Borusa stands at the console. He tells the Doctor about his plans to remain President of the Time Lords forever with the help of Rassilon's ring. He firmly believes that Rassilon is still alive and that is what he wants to achieve. With the help of the Crown of Rassilon, Borusa can give orders to the doctor. Together they transfer themselves into the interior of the tomb. The doctors realize what Borusa's plan is, but they too are paralyzed by the power of the crown. The four combine their mental powers and can defend themselves against the crown. Suddenly Rassilon's voice rang out and an image of the ruler appeared over his grave. He asks Borusa to put on the ring to be by his side forever. Borusa follows Rassilon's recommendation. When he put the ring on, he feels great pain. The ring disappears, Borusa dissolves and appears as an ornament of the tomb and petrified. He also offers the doctors to stay with him forever, but they thankfully decline. They ask to be able to go back to their respective times, which Rassilon grants them. Little by little, the doctors and their companions enter the TARDIS, from where they are sent to their respective times using the time expander.

Only the fifth doctor, Tegan and Turlogh are still present when Chancellor Flavia transmaterializes in the burial chamber. She reveals to the doctor that he is the rightful successor to the Lord President. But he leaves Gallifrey with his companions in the TARDIS and plans not to return too quickly.

production

In The Five Doctors is the second multi-Doctor story of Doctor Who history. Contrary to the usual handling in the classic series, this story was not divided into several episodes, but rather produced as a sequence with a length of 90 minutes. Despite this, Baker took part in promotional appearances for the 20th anniversary.
