William Nicholas Stone Courtney (born December 16, 1929 in Cairo , Egypt , † February 22, 2011 in London , England ) was a British actor who was best known for his portrayal of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart in the British television series Doctor Who .

Life

Courtney was born in Cairo to a British diplomat and grew up in Egypt, France and Kenya . After completing his military service in the British Army , he attended the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art for two years . He then played theater in Northampton and London . In 1957 he made his first television appearance in a supporting role in a television series, but it was not until the mid-1960s that he began receiving more frequent film and television roles. Among other things, he played guest roles in the British series Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone , Simon Templar and Task Force Police . In 1965 he appeared next to William Hartnell as Doctor Who for the first time in the series of the same name. In four episodes he played the character of the agent Bret Vyon . In four episodes of the Doctor Who multi-part series The Web of Fear , he first appeared in his role as officer Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart in 1968 , initially as a colonel . From the multi-part series The Invasion from the same year, he was promoted to brigadier . In this role he appeared in 103 episodes of the series between 1968 and 1989, although from 1975 his character was only created as a recurring guest role. In Doctor Who - spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures , he was in 2008 to see again in two episodes in his long-term role. His feature film engagements were significantly less frequent, mostly only in minor supporting roles. These included the horror film The Thirteen Slaves of Dr. Fu Man Chu alongside Christopher Lee , the science fiction film Accident in Space and the thriller Incendiary by Sharon Maguire . In addition to his film and television career, he continued to work in the theater and had various engagements in London's West End .

Courtney was a second marriage and had two children from his first marriage.
