Attack of the Cybermen (Attack of the Cybermen) is the 137th plotline of the British science fiction - television series Doctor Who . It consists of 2 episodes that aired on January 5, 1985 and January 12, 1985.
action
After the doctor managed to repair the TARDIS chameleon circuit , he headed for planet Earth in 1985 to show Peri the passing Halley's comet . At the same time on Earth, Lytton, a former Dalek mercenary, and his gang of crooks went down the sewers below London to steal a vault of diamonds valued at 10,000 pounds. But instead of the safe, the crooks find a group of cybermen ( cybermen ) who they immediately capture.
Once on earth, the doctor and Peri discover a distress signal that Lytton has sent and begin to investigate the sewer system, where they find Russell, one of Lytton's crooks who is actually a police officer who is spying on Lytton. When the doctor learns that Lytton is behind the distress signal, he returns to the TARDIS with Peri and Russell, but is there overpowered by the cybermen, captured and should be sent to Telos together with Lytton. However, Russell lost his life in the exchange of blows.
At the same time on the planet Telos, the two slaves Bates and Stratton try to escape from the clutches of the cyber controller , but are captured by the cybermen and are now to be turned into cybermen as a punishment. The doctor, who has meanwhile arrived on Telos, is supposed to repair the damaged crypts of the cybermen in order to save the life of his companions, but is attacked there by malfunctioning cybermen and cybermen, whereupon he manages to escape. As he learns from Flast, leader of the Cyrons, they were the original inhabitants of the planet before the Cybermans made Telos their second home planet after the destruction of Mondas and that the Cybermans are planning to use the power of Halleiys Comet to change the course of Mondas to prevent its destruction in 1986.
With the help of the cyrons and a Lytton, half turned into a cyberman, the doctor manages to overpower the cybermen on Telos, in the course of which the cyber controller and cyber leader destroy each other, and to free Peri. In the crossfire, however, Lytton also had to die, for whose death the doctor is responsible. In consultation with the cyrons, he also blows up the headquarters and tombs of the cybermen on Telos to prevent their plans to save Mondas.
production
Behind the writer Paula Moore are several authors: Paula Woolsey , who wrote the script, Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis , who created the Cybermen in the 60s for The Tenth Planet , and Eric Saward , who acted as the creator of Lytton and large parts of the Rewrote the script. Furthermore, ideas from Doctor Who fan Ian Levine are said to have been included in the story as plot elements in order to link them more closely to The Tomb of the Cybermen .
The fact that the doctor repaired the TARDIS chameleon circuit at the beginning of the story was an idea from producer John Nathan Turner, which would have a permanent impact on the series, but this idea was discarded after a few episodes.
Pennant Roberts was originally supposed to direct the two episodes but was not available when shooting started. Roberts was supposed to direct the double episode The Amulet ( Time Lash ) towards the end of the season .

Trivia
- From the perspective of the cybermen / cybermen, the plot of the story begins shortly after the events of the storyline The Tomb of the Cybermen , after the second doctor visited Telos for the first time.
- Lytton appeared recently in The Resurrection of the Daleks ( Resurrection of the Daleks on), where he met as mercenaries of the Daleks to fifth doctor.
- When the TARDIS lands on Earth, it lands at 76 Totters Lane, the same place where the TARDIS was at the beginning of the series The Child of the Stars .
- Mainly because of the second part of the story, the series was exposed to several accusations of glorification of violence at the time, as in one scene the Kyber controller squeezed Lytton's hands bloodily.
- The working title of the episodes was The Cold War (dt. The cold war )
- The double episode is Terry Molloy's only appearance in the series without make-up. Otherwise, he would appear in several episodes produced in the 80s as Davros, the creator of the Daleks.
- In the German dubbed version, the doctor landed with the TARDIS not in London in 1985, but in 1993.
