The grave of the Cybermen (The Tomb of the Cybermen) is the 37th story arc of the British science fiction - television series Doctor Who . It consists of 4 episodes that aired between September 2, 1967 and September 23, 1967.

action

On the planet Telos, an archaeological expedition uncovered a secret entrance in a mountain. Just as the research group is about to enter the cave, the TARDIS materializes and the doctor and his companions Jamie and Victoria join the expedition. Inside, the group finds a facility used by cybermen to test weapons.
In one of the rooms, the group discovered a gap that brought them even deeper under the facility, and when they arrived there they discovered a huge crypt with inactive cybermen. Kaftan, the head of the research group, seals the entrance to the crypt and locks the doctor and some researchers, including Toberman, Kaftan's personal assistant, there. She then reactivates the cybermen trapped there, who immediately set about resuscitating their leader, the cyber controller.
Victoria, who stayed on the surface with Kaftan, recognizes her evil intentions and can overwhelm them - but without knowing exactly how to open the gap again, she looks for other members of the expedition who can help her. Inside, the doctor has to confront the cyber controller who intends to transform the entire research group into cybermen. As it turns out, the cybermen's crypt is a test to find the most intelligent beings and turn them into cybermen.
Shortly before the conversion begins, Victoria can open the gap with the help of researchers Hopper and Callum and save the researchers locked in the crypt, all except Toberman, who stays behind to distract the cyber controller. Shortly afterwards, Kaftan and her colleague Klieg attack the doctor, Jamie, Victoria and the research group, overwhelm them and open the gap, whereby the cyber controller, accompanied by Toberman, who is now under his control, can come to the surface.
Kaftan and Klieg introduce themselves to the Cyber Controller and try to explain to him that they deliberately led the expedition to Telos in order to awaken the Cybermen, but the Controller is anything but enthusiastic; Toberman knocks Klieg unconscious and the cyber controller unceremoniously kills Kaftan. In view of the events, the doctor tries to persuade Toberman to take him out of the control of the Cybermen, which he succeeds. What follows is a fight between the Cyber Controller and Toberman, as a result of which both can be pushed back through the gap in the direction of the crypt. The doctor seals the entrance to the crypt and the cyber controller and Toberman are killed by an electric shock.

production

The working titles of the episode were The Ice Tombs of Telos (in German Die Eisgrüfte auf Telos ) and The Cybermen Planet (in German Der Cybermen Planet ).
The serial was originally intended to be broadcast as the fourth season finale, but was then held back until the start of the fifth season. The Cybermats also made their first appearance in the following episodes, operated by radio remote controls, and during breaks in filming, Deborah Watling was used to chase around the set. The scene in which the Cybermen wake up from their crypt was completely recorded in one take.

publication

A novel by Gerry Davis was published by Target Books in 1978 under the title Doctor Who and the Tomb of the Cybermen .
The serial was one of many that was part of the lost episodes of the series and was to be released on video in 1992 with the help of Telesnaps and a voiceover by Jon Pertwee . However, it was completely found in Hong Kong at the end of 1991 and all 4 episodes were then released on video in May 1992. All four episodes were released on DVD for the first time in 2002 and a new edition followed in 2012 with new bonus material as part of the Doctor Who - Revisitation box sets.
The complete serial was released on April 30, 2020 for the first time with a German dubbed version on DVD by Polyband Medien in an Amazon-exclusive limited edition, which, in addition to the 4 episodes, also included various bonus content, such as a postcard set, an autograph card from Frazer Hines and much more . A regular DVD version will be released on May 8, 2020.
