The Three Doctors is the 65th story arc of the British science fiction - television series Doctor Who . It consists of 4 episodes that aired between December 30, 1972 and January 20, 1973.

action

While a superluminous energy signal is being received on earth, Gallifrey is threatened by a black hole that is draining all energy from the planet. With no way out, the only hope left for the Time Lords is that the doctor will save them. But he can only do this himself; and so they break the first law of time and let the doctor meet his earlier incarnations, and so send the second doctor to the aid of the third doctor. Instead of the two trying to help the Time Lords, they argue without interruption and so the Time Lords have no choice but to send the first doctor to help as well. But he is caught in a vortex of time and can only help his two future incarnations via the TARDIS radio screen. As the three doctors slowly begin to work together, the UNIT headquarters where the TARDIS was parked is attacked by strange slime creatures. To escape the creatures, the two doctors let the TARDIS devour the strange energy signal and, together with Jo Grant, the brigadier, Sergeant Benton and Dr. Tyler transported to an anti-matter universe, where they meet the believed dead Time Lord Omega. Omega was once a solar engineer for the Time Lords, who was responsible for making the energy of a supernova usable for the Time Lord Society. But instead of being killed in the supernova explosion, he was transferred to the anti-matter universe where his will is law. But the time in exile let Omega go crazy and so his only thought is to take revenge on the Time Lords, which is why he created a black hole at Gallifrey with the power of the anti-matter universe in order to destroy the planet and the Time Lords destroy. As it turns out, Omega not only lost his mind during his time in exile, but also his own body, which is why he could never leave the anti-matter universe. But the doctor offers him a solution: Omega would send the doctor's human companions back into the normal universe and in return he would build him a machine that would liberate Omega. He agrees to the solution, sends the companions back to earth and receives an energy shield generator from the doctor. However, this was charged with positive matter and caused a chain reaction in the anti-matter universe, whereby it collapsed and also destroyed Omega. Omega's destruction also sent the two doctors back to earth with the TARDIS and the rescued Time Lords sent the first and second doctor back into their time streams. As a thank you for his help, the third doctor, stranded on earth, receives a new dematerialization circuit for his TARDIS, which allows him to travel through time and space again.

production

The working title of the series was Black Hole (in German black hole ) and was originally supposed to show all three doctors in equal parts. However, William Hartnell was too ill and weak to take part in the filming of the story and so his role was downgraded to a previously recorded cameo . This was the last time Hartnell was to play Doctor, and also his last role in a film / television production before his death in 1975. Promotional images for the serial showing all three doctors were taken in Hartnell's garden and garage and were the only ones Time that all three actors met. Frazer Hines was originally supposed to appear in his role as Jamie McCrimmon as the companion of the second doctor, but was not available for the shooting days due to scheduling reasons. His role was then attributed to Sergeant Benton in the script.
Clyde Pollitt , who played the Time Lord Chancellor in this serial, also played one of the three Time Lords who banished the second doctor to his exile on earth at the end of the series The War Games . According to producer Barry Letts, this would have been a conscious decision and it would have been the same person.
