action

The plot follows on from the end of the episode The Nature of Man . Timothy opens the pocket watch. This distracts “the family” in such a way that Martha can use this moment to snatch a weapon from the family and flee back to school with the others. Still confused, John helps defend the school; Martha and Joan look for the clock. The family attacks with a first wave of living scarecrows, which the school-leavers prepared for war are able to defeat. After they reveal that they discovered the TARDIS , Joan realizes that John is the doctor. While the family continues to attack, John, Joan and Martha run to an empty house. They are discovered by Timothy who gives them the watch. Martha and Joan try to get John to open the clock and become a doctor again. This then breaks down in tears because he does not want to give up Joan. The pocket watch then shows the two of them a vision of their future coexistence as human beings.

John goes to the family's spaceship, offers her the clock and demands that they stop the fire in return. He stumbles in the process. The family opens the clock and notices that it is empty, so that John has already turned back into the doctor. He pretended to be in a mess in order to start the self-destruct mechanism of the spaceship. The doctor and the family escape, but find them and give each member harsh sentences.

He goes back to Joan and offers her to fly with him, but she refuses. He also makes her the offer to start over, but she refuses this too and blames him for hiding in her time of all times. She also justified the decision with the fact that, unlike humans, he will never die. The doctor leaves thereupon.

He and Timothy say goodbye and the doctor gives him the pocket watch as a memento. During the First World War, Timothy remembers a vision of a bomb and is able to prevent his death. In his later years he recognized the doctor and Martha on a war memorial day. These confirm him while he still has his watch on.
