Steven Moffat
Steven Moffat , OBE (born November 18, 1961 in Paisley , Scotland ) is a British screenwriter who has been writing screenplays for television series since the late 1980s. He is married to the television producer Sue Vertue .
life and career
Moffat originally worked as a teacher. His debut as a screenwriter was the series Press Gang (1989), which he created with his father Bill Moffat. He continued to write for television series and was the author of two sitcoms ( Chalk and Joking Apart ). In 2000 he created the sitcom Coupling - Who with whom? with his wife as a producer. The series was very successful and ran until 2004. Four seasons with a total of 28 episodes were produced. He also wrote the never-aired pilot for the American version of the series, which was discontinued after four episodes.
2005 Moffat wrote for the series Doctor Who the two-parter The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances ( The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances ) of the Hugo Award won. For the second season he wrote the episode Das Mädchen im Kamin ( The Girl in the Fireplace ) in 2006 , for the third season 2007 the episode Don't blink ( Blink ) and for the fourth season in May 2008 the two-parter Tödliche Stille / Wald der Toten ( Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead ). At the same time, the BBC announced that Moffat would replace Doctor Who’s showrunner ( EP / managing director , executive producer and screenwriter) , Russell T Davies , from season five (shooting from 2010). As a showrunner, Moffat led the series production and financing as well as the drafting of the storylines up to the tenth season ( eleventh and twelfth doctorates ). In January 2016 it was announced that he would then pass the baton on to Chris Chibnall ( Broadchurch ).
In 2013 Moffat had a guest role in Peter Davison's short film The Five (ish) Doctors Reboot . Almost all actors in this parodic special for the 50th anniversary of the first broadcast of Doctor Who embody self-deprecating, distorted versions of themselves, including Moffat.
Moffat also wrote the 2007 BBC TV miniseries Jekyll , a modern version of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde .
Together with Mark Gatiss he developed the concept of the BBC television series Sherlock , which is also successful in Germany , in which they transfer Arthur Conan Doyle's stories into modern times. He was nominated for an Emmy in 2011 for his screenplay for the first episode ( A Fall of Pink ) . In 2014 , he won the Emmy for Best Screenplay in a Miniseries or TV Movie for the episode His Last Oath .
In June 2015 Moffat was appointed Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Elizabeth II for his artistic merits . This honor causes the name suffix "OBE".
