Mark Gatiss [ ˈgeɪ.tɪs ] (born October 17, 1966 , in Sedgefield , County Durham , England ) is a British actor , comedian and screenwriter . In the German-speaking area it is mainly by the BBC - television series Sherlock become known for it along with Steven Moffat developed the concept, wrote several episodes in which he as Mycroft Holmes is seen.

Life

As a child, Gatiss was interested in Arthur Conan Doyles ' Sherlock Holmes , the work of HG Wells and the television series Doctor Who .

In 1992, he published his first Doctor Who story, Nightshade , which was followed by three more. His first screenplays and radio plays he wrote for the Doctor Who - franchise .

As an actor, he became known in English-speaking countries through the comedy quartet The League of Gentlemen , of which he is a member with Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton and Jeremy Dyson. The group's stage program won the 1997 Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe . In the same year came a comedy radio series On the Town with The League of Gentlemen and two years later a television series. For the television series The League of Gentlemen , the group received the Royal Television Society Award and the Golden Rose of Montreux .
