Benedict Cumberbatch
Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch , CBE (born July 19, 1976 in London , England ) is a British actor and voice actor . He gained fame primarily through his role as detective Sherlock Holmes in the British crime series Sherlock . He received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in 2015 for his role in the biopic The Imitation Game .
Life
Cumberbatch is the son of actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham . His cousin is the actress Hannah Taylor-Gordon . Genealogists discovered that Cumberbatch is a 17th degree great-nephew of Arthur Conan Doyle , creator of Sherlock Holmes , whom Benedict Cumberbatch is known worldwide for portraying. Cumberbatch and Doyle's common ancestor is John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster , son of King Edward III of England . John of Gaunt was Doyle's 15th degree great-grandfather and Cumberbatch's 17th-degree great-grandfather.
Benedict Cumberbatch attended Harrow School in the London borough of Harrow and the University of Manchester . He then graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art .
In November 2014, he became engaged to the acting director Sophie Hunter . The wedding took place on the Isle of Wight in February 2015 . Their first child, a son, was born in June 2015, and their second son was born in March 2017.
On June 12, 2015, Cumberbatch was named Commander of the British Empire by Elizabeth II .
On November 25, 2017, Cumberbatch happened to witness a four men robbery on a cyclist. Together with a taxi driver, he drove the men to flight.
Career
He gained his first experience in the television business in 2000 in an episode of the British television series Heartbeat . In 2003 he got a role in To Kill a King with Tim Roth and Dougray Scott and starred in Dr. Slippery the son of Paul Slippery (played by Hugh Laurie ). He celebrated his breakthrough in 2004 with Hawking - The Search for the Beginning of Time , a biography about the scientist Stephen Hawking . For this, Cumberbatch received a nomination for "Best Actor" at the BAFTA Awards . In 2005 he played the lead role in the miniseries To The Ends of The Earth , which is based on the book series of the same name by the author William Golding . In 2007 he starred in the role of William Pitt in the drama Amazing Grace .
From 2008 to 2013 he played alongside Stephanie Cole, Roger Allam and John Finnemore in the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Cabin Pressure, written by Finnemore, as the shy and nervous pilot Martin Crieff . Since 2010 he has played the title role in Sherlock , a series based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes .
In Peter Jackson's film adaptation of the Tolkien novel The Hobbit , he portrayed the dragon Smaug using performance capture and spoke to the necromancer . In the sequel to Star Trek , Star Trek Into Darkness , he played the villain John Harrison alias Khan. In 2013 he starred in Steve McQueen's drama 12 Years a Slave , which won an Oscar for best picture. For his performance in Sherlock episode His last oath he won in 2014 an Emmy as Best Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie . He starred in the biopic Alan Turing The Imitation Game (2014) and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. In 2015 he starred as William Bulger in the mafia drama Black Mass . In October 2016, Marvel's film Doctor Strange was released , in which Cumberbatch played the title role. In 2017 he had another small appearance in this role in Thor: Day of Decision . He was also seen as Doctor Strange in the films Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) . In March 2017 it was announced that he would take on the lead role in the upcoming novel How to Stop Time .
In Danny Boyle's production of Frankenstein at the Royal National Theater in London, he played the main characters Victor Frankenstein or Frankenstein's Monster, alternating with Jonny Lee Miller in the evening . Both were critically acclaimed and collectively received the Evening Standard Theater Award for 2011 and the Olivier Award .
In German, Benedict Cumberbatch is mostly dubbed by Sascha Rotermund , in some films and the series Sherlock and Parade's End - The Last Gentleman by Tommy Morgenstern . In 2014 he lent his voice to the secret agent in the animated film The Penguins from Madagascar and was dubbed by Heino Ferch .
