The Tiger Who Came to Tea is a 2019 British animated short film directed by Robin Shaw. It is based on the children's book A Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr .

action

A completely normal morning: A little red cat causes chaos on the streets and Daddy forgets his keys on the way to work and returns home to get them. He says goodbye to Mummy and his little daughter Sophie and then has to run for the bus. Sophie and Mummy want to go to the park, are stopped briefly by the milkman who delivers the milk like every morning, and make new plans when it starts to rain. You are baking cookies, muffins and a cake and want to have a big coffee drink for two. The table is set when the bell suddenly rings and a huge tiger stands in front of the door. He is hungry and both let him sit down at the coffee table. The tiger eats the cookies, the muffins and the cake, drinks all the tea, milk and water from the water tank before he eats all the supplies in the house. Sophie then takes him to the bathroom, brushes his teeth and brushes him. Although she asks for it, the tiger does not stay: he thanks for the nice cup of coffee and leaves.

The kitchen is chaotic and all supplies are eaten. Sophie cannot be bathed because the tiger drank the water in the house's water reservoir. When Daddy comes home, even his after-work beer is gone. The family decides to go to a café in the evening, where they eat and drink and Sophie tells about the tiger. The next morning Sophie and Mummy buy a lot, including a can of tiger food, but the tiger never came back to eat.

production

The Tiger Who Came to Tea is based on the children's book of the same name by Judith Kerr , which appeared in 1968 and was published in German-speaking countries under the title A Tiger Comes to Tea . In February 2018, on the occasion of the book's 50th anniversary, Lupus Films and HarperCollins Children's Books announced that they were planning a film adaptation of the book. The animation of the film took a year to complete, with 20,000 individual drawings being hand-animated. The animation style is based closely on Kerr's illustration. Kerr himself helped prepare the film; she died in May 2019, the film is dedicated to her memory.

Channel 4 announced in January 2019 that the animation film was scheduled to air for Christmas 2019. In July 2019 the dubbing voices for the main characters were announced, including David Walliams as narrator, David Oyelowo as Tiger, Tamsin Greig as Mummy and Benedict Cumberbatch as Daddy. Cumberbatch had already hosted a reading of the book together with Kerr on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the book in 2018.

In October 2019 it was announced that Robbie Williams had played the theme song for the film Hey Tiger! will sing. The music is by David Arnold, the lyrics by Don Black . Arnold also wrote the score for The Tiger Who Came to Tea .

The Tiger Who Came to Tea had its television premiere on December 24, 2019 on Channel 4.
