The Grinch is an American animated film released by Illumination Entertainment in 2018. The adaptation of the children's book How the Grinch Stole Christmas , published in 1957 by Theodor Seuss Geisel , was directed by Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney , while Benedict Cumberbatch provided the original voice of the Grinch .

action

A green creature called the “Grinch” lives lonely on a mountain top with his dog Max. In the valley is the town of Whoville, whose inhabitants, called Whos, live out their joy and good humor, especially at Christmas time. When the Grinch, who has a fundamental hatred of Christmas, has to go shopping in town, the mayor announces that everything will be celebrated even bigger this year. For this reason, the Grinch decides to spoil the party for the Whos, which is why one night he secretly steals all the presents and all Christmas decorations. When the Whos wake up on Christmas morning and discover the theft, they begin to sing together. When the Grinch hears these chants, he feels unexpected joy and returns the gifts to the people of Whoville. After apologizing for what he did, young Cindy-Lou invited him to celebrate Christmas with them.

production

In February 2013, Universal and Illumination Entertainment announced a joint Grinch movie that would be directed by Peter Candeland and Yarrow Cheney . With the release of the first trailer, however, it became known that Candeland had been replaced by Scott Mosier . In April 2016, Benedict Cumberbatch was hired as a spokesman for the Grinch. A good two months before the planned theatrical release, in September 2018, further speakers for the film, including Rashida Jones , Angela Lansbury , Kenan Thompson and Pharrell Williams , were announced.

The first trailer was released on March 8, 2018; a second followed on July 14th. The final trailer was released on September 18, 2018. The film was released in US cinemas on November 9 and in German cinemas on November 29, 2018. It was also released on the Chinese film market on December 14, 2018. In the US, The Grinch was available digitally from January 22, 2019 and on DVD and Blu-ray from February 5, 2019 . The German home cinema launch took place on March 29, 2019.

Reviews

The Grinch has so far convinced 60% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 51 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

Martin Schwickert from the Augsburger Allgemeine sees the film as a weaker version compared to the film adaptation from 2000 , in which the main character never develops a frightening effect. The Illumination Studios would fill the film with entertaining action and comedy interludes and convey the important message "in times of social polarization, bullying and hate crimes" that hate can be conquered with unreserved kindness. Furthermore, the German dubbing by Otto Waalkes is praised, in which the Grinch gets something funny even in the meanest moments.

In contrast to Schwickert, Antje Wessels criticizes film starts primarily for the lack of proximity to the original. The commercial criticism, which makes the story timeless, as well as the only briefly represented background story of the Grinch are almost completely omitted; The terrifying and mean Christmas hater has become a softened and kind-hearted antihero and the silliness of Waalkes also means that the Grinch is deprived of its malevolence and thus the emotional fall of the story. On the other hand, The Grinch has the strength of humor, which the directors would have relied on. This creates a dynamic with amusing scenes and successful punch lines that are at least consistent with the nasty side that has been pushed back. The film could also shine optically, setting new standards within the illumination studios. In conclusion, Wessels draws: "With a lot of slapstick, bizarre characters and enough emotions [...]" The Grinch "is a solid Christmas film for the whole family that doesn't hurt anyone."

Bilge Ebiri from Vulture positively emphasizes that the film manages to give its main character, in contrast to Geisel's original, a comprehensible motivation instead of portraying him as hating Christmas from the outset. The flashbacks used for this are just so short that they are not annoying and Pharrell Williams manages to introduce something new in a well-known form, so that the film creates a balance between the original tonality and adjustments for the modern audience. The Grinch also falls into the trap of trying to impress and convince the audience with effects, but most of the time you can enjoy the view of a malicious person who sees the mistakes of their actions.

Gross profit

On the opening weekend, the film surprisingly made it to the top of the North American cinema charts with gross proceeds of 66 million US dollars . On the second weekend, the film was still at number 2 on the US charts with sales of 38.17 million US dollars at the North American box office. In the third week of the cinema, the film was able to stay in the top 3 and take third place with revenues of 30.21 million US dollars. On the opening weekend in German cinemas, the film was able to reach the top position in the German cinema charts with 400,000 cinema tickets sold, including the previews. At the same time, he was able to mark second place in North America with gross profits of 17.73 million US dollars. On the second weekend, too, the film was able to reach number 1 in the German cinema charts with 360,000 cinema-goers and on the third weekend with 265,000 viewers. In the following week, The Grinch landed only at number 2 in the German cinema charts with 315,000 cinema tickets sold. Overall, the film was able to gross 270.62 million US dollars in North America. The production costs of 75 million US dollars are offset by worldwide revenues of 511.30 million US dollars, making it the most financially successful Christmas film of all time, overtaking Kevin - Home Alone at the box office in early January 2019 . In Germany, the film had 2,274,394 cinema-goers, which brought in 17.72 million euros and is 8th in the 2018 annual charts .
