Star Trek (also Star Trek - The Future Has Begun ) is an American science fiction film from 2009. It is the eleventh feature film based on the science fiction series Spaceship Enterprise by Gene Roddenberry . On April 7, 2009, the film celebrated its official premiere in Sydney .

The film is a reboot of the previous Star Trek works, for which director J. J. Abrams cast numerous well-known roles with new, young actors. As the first part of the new Kelvin timeline , the film particularly highlights the prehistory of the characters Kirk and Spock within the alternative timeline of the Star Trek universe.

action

In 2233, the Federation ship USS Kelvin investigates inexplicable energy turbulence. Suddenly the huge Romulan spaceship Narada emerges from this turbulence. It attacks the Kelvin , who is hopelessly inferior to the technologically advanced Narada . Ayel, the Narada's first officer , demands that Captain Richard Robau come aboard. He gives in and hands over the command to his first officer, George Kirk. On board the Narada , Nero, the ship's commander, asks Robau about Ambassador Spock, whom he does not know. Thereupon Nero asks about the sidereal time and kills Robau with his lance when he gives the date of his time.

The Narada continues the attack and the Kelvin must be evacuated. In order to enable the rest of the crew - including his wife who is about to give birth - to escape and because it is no longer possible to program the Kelvin on a collision course due to technical problems , George Kirk remains on board and steers her manually into the attacking ship . Just moments after the birth of his son James Tiberius, he rams the Narada and puts it out of action. Through his sacrifice, the remaining 800 crew members of the Kelvin can get to safety.

James T. Kirk grows up to be a rebellious young man. On the occasion of a fight he caused with Starfleet cadets , he meets Captain Christopher Pike , who motivates him to follow the heroic example of his father and to join the fleet. At the Star Fleet Academy he befriends the grumpy but cordial doctor Dr. Leonard McCoy . His attempts to conquer the attractive linguist Uhura are unsuccessful.

The young Spock , already with the rank of commander, found his way to the academy after having experienced a lot of contempt on Vulkan because of his partly human ancestry. Among other things, he is responsible for the programming of the Kobayashi Maru test , a training scenario intended to confront the cadets with the inevitable destruction of their own ship. Kirk is the first to pass the test, but everything indicates that he tampered with the test. During the official hearing in Kirk, an emergency call arrives from Vulkan. All cadets are then called to their ships, but Kirk is not allowed to participate in the operation due to the manipulation allegations. His friend "Pill" McCoy therefore smuggles him as his patient on board the new spaceship Enterprise .

Kirk recognizes similarities between the emergency call and the circumstances that led to the destruction of the Kelvin , and warns Pike of a trap. Due to the inattention of the pilot Sulu , the departure of the Enterprise is delayed , which turns out to be a life-saving circumstance. Because when they arrive, the rest of the fleet has already been destroyed, and the Narada is drilling into the planetary core of the volcano. In view of the overwhelming enemy ship, Pike is forced to follow Nero's request to board the Narada . He hands over command to Spock and promotes Kirk to first officer. When Kirk and Sulu manage to sabotage the drill, it is already too late: Nero shoots a projectile with red matter into the borehole, which creates a black hole inside Vulkan that completely consumes the planet. Only about ten thousand Vulcans, including the council of elders and Spock's father Sarek , can be saved, while Spock's mother, Amanda Grayson, is killed. With the aim of destroying all Federation worlds one after the other , Nero sets course for Earth and interrogates Pike in order to get to details about their defenses.

After a heated debate about further tactics, Spock suspends Kirk because of mutiny on the ice world Delta Vega. There Kirk meets Spock, who comes from the future, who explains to Kirk the circumstances how he and Nero got into Kirk's presence:

In 2387, the galaxy is threatened by an abnormal supernova . On board a specially equipped ship, Ambassador Spock tries to stop the catastrophe by artificially creating a black hole using red matter that is supposed to absorb the exploded star. But the Vulcan fails to save the planet Romulus from destruction. Driven by revenge for the death of his family and the annihilation of his people, Nero, captain of the Romulan mining ship Narada , attacks Spock. Unable to free themselves from the gravitational field of the black hole, both ships are thrown into the past . Nero was the first to appear 154 years in the past and destroy the Kelvin , creating an alternative timeline as it progresses . While Nero waits 25 years for Spock, it only takes seconds for him to appear in 2258. He is captured by Nero and released on Delta Vega. Nero keeps Spock's ship with the red matter on board and uses it to destroy Vulcan, while Spock has to watch helplessly.

Spock also tells Kirk about the friendship that is to be striven for between the two of them and explains to him that he absolutely has to become captain of the Enterprise . They go to the Federation outpost on this planet, where they meet Montgomery Scott , who is doing involuntary service here. Using one of his own future transport theories that old Spock tells him, Scott and Kirk can be beamed aboard the Enterprise , even though it is flying at warp speed .

Kirk follows the advice of old Spock and provokes his younger counterpart to an emotional overreaction, which disqualifies him for the office of captain. Now under Kirk's command, the Enterprise sets course for Earth, where Nero is already preparing the planetary drill. With a clever tactical maneuver, proposed by Pavel Chekov , the Enterprise succeeds in emerging from subspace immediately behind Saturn's moon Titan and hiding behind it. After Kirk and Spock have come to terms with each other, they are beamed onto the Narada to free Captain Pike. Spock seizes the ship of his older self, destroying the drill and luring Nero away from Earth. As he goes on a collision course with the Narada , the Enterprise appears and destroys the interceptor missiles fired by the Narada . At the last moment Spock, Kirk and Pike are beamed back to the Enterprise by "Scotty" . The released red matter creates a black hole in the middle of the Narada . Kirk offers Nero to rescue his crew, but the Romulan prefers sinking his ship. The Enterprise also threatens to be drawn into the Singularity , but it escapes destruction by dropping and igniting its warp core, the shock wave of which catapults it out of the danger area.

Kirk is promoted to Captain of the Enterprise , succeeding Admiral Pike, who has also been promoted. Spock, who intends to leave Starfleet to help build a volcanic colony, meets his older self. Ambassador Spock explains to him that he and Kirk depend on each other and advises him to follow his feelings instead of completely subscribing to logic. The younger Spock then takes over the post of first officer on the Enterprise under Kirk's command. The film ends with the legendary opening sequence from the original series, but read by Leonard Nimoy / Mr. Spock.

production

script

The tenth Star Trek film Star Trek: Nemesis from 2002 had little commercial success, and the fifth Star Trek television series Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled in 2005 after four seasons due to low ratings. Nevertheless, the development of a new movie began in 2005.

The film was to be titled Star Trek: The Beginning and set in the 22nd century of the Star Trek universe . It was supposed to be a prequel to the Star Trek series that followed the Star Trek: Enterprise series, which was also conceived as a prequel . The subject of the film was supposed to be the war of the people against the Romulans , which had been mentioned as a historical event in various series episodes . Erik Jendresen wrote the script; Rick Berman , who had been primarily responsible for the franchise since Roddenberry's death in 1991, was barely involved. For various reasons the project was canceled by Paramount Pictures and the development of a new film was temporarily suspended.

When JJ Abrams was finishing his first directorial work Mission: Impossible III , Paramount asked about his interest in developing a new Star Trek film. Not even a fan of the series, Abrams gathered the authors Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk around him. Orci and Kurtzman were avowed supporters of the series, while Burk, for example, was hardly interested in them. The team worked together for about a year on a story that satisfied everyone. It was clear to Abrams early on that he wanted to rely on the original series and bring the icons Kirk and Spock back to the screen.

Because classic elements of Star Trek had already been parodied several times, for example in the hit comedy Galaxy Quest , Abram's humor was particularly important in the script: He was concerned about involuntary comedy. When developing the script, Kurtzman and Orci also wanted to make Star Trek more Star Wars- themed. George Lucas ' science fiction franchise is also generally gaining acceptance among non-fan audience. The scriptwriters wanted to give space battles in particular more speed than was usual with Star Trek . Even in its development phase , Leonard Nimoy was enthusiastic about the project and, much to the delight of the authors, showed an interest in performing as Spock. The writers also looked for ways to fit William Shatner as Kirk in the story. Eventually the idea was dropped: The script should have been rewritten too much to allow Shatner to appear.

Despite being only intended as a producer (with his company Bad Robot Productions ), Abrams eventually decided to direct the new film as well. Rick Berman's contract, which expired in 2006, was not renewed by Paramount.

occupation

For many roles that have been associated with certain actors for decades, other, younger actors had to be found. Contrary to Abrams' expectations, the casting of Spock proved easier than that of Kirk. Zachary Quinto , who visually corresponded to the original Spock actor Leonard Nimoy, was chosen relatively quickly as Nimoy's successor. Chris Pine was the last to find the new ensemble after Abrams had been looking for a suitable Kirk actor for a long time without success. Matt Damon was also briefly discussed for the role of Kirk. Finally, the planned restart of the film series was filled with relatively unknown actors, which, according to director Abrams, is a risk, but also gives the film more freshness: viewers can identify the actors better with the respective role.

Majel Barrett can be heard for the last time in Star Trek as the voice of the Enterprise on- board computer . The scientist Randy Pausch , who died of cancer in July 2008, made a cameo in the film .

Filming

California State University at Northridge served as the backdrop for the Starfleet Academy

Filming of Star Trek began on November 7, 2007 and ended in late March 2008, and the production budget for the film was around $ 150 million. The film was shot exclusively in California , including Long Beach and California State University, Northridge . Their campus served as the venue for the Starfleet Academy. The interior shots on board the Enterprise were made on the premises of Paramount Studios .

publication

The original plan was to release the film as early as Christmas 2008, but the release date was postponed to the beginning of May 2009.

The official world premiere of the film, which surprisingly had been shown for the first time a few hours earlier in Austin, Texas , took place on April 7, 2009 in Sydney . In addition to the German premiere on April 16, 2009 in Berlin , the promotion tour also took the leading actors to Austria on April 14 .

synchronization

The synchronization took over the Berliner Synchron GmbH for a dialogue book of Änne Troester and the dialogue director of Björn Schalla and Kim Hasper .

reception

criticism

The first Australian critics spoke of a successful restart of the film series, which recently disappointed. JJ Abrams' version of Star Trek impresses with its action and dynamism. Ian Cuthbertson of The Australian not only saw one of the better Star Trek films, but one of the best science fiction productions. Like other critics, he praised the impressive special effects that created a believable atmosphere. The action-packed film develops a dynamic like the best Bond films and also impresses with its cast: “Star Trek is young again.” In their reviews, Andrew L. Urban and Louise Keller are also convinced that the surprisingly fresh, eleventh film is the Series will find its audience beyond fandom .

But despite its impressive quality, in the opinion of Garth Franklin, the film does not have the depth of other films that redefine the respective franchise such as Batman Begins or Casino Royale . The atmosphere of Roddenberry's Star Trek universe can be felt, but the moral impetus of the original is missing. Franklin locates a major weak point in the script. Although it is the best of the author duo Kurtzman and Orci so far, they do not succeed in making the story free from unbelievable coincidences and dramaturgical holes. The opponent Nero also seems like one of the many stale copies of the vengeful Khan from the second Star Trek film , who is still unmatched. The first reviews unanimously praise the outstanding sound design .

The young actors made a largely good impression on the critics. According to Garth Franklin, Chris Pine succeeds convincingly in adopting the role of Kirk free of Shatner's mannerisms. The character looks arrogant, but still sympathetic. Zachary Quinto is a solid Spock, but he still lacks the special humor and the condescending manner with which Leonard Nimoy filled the role. In contrast, Louise Keller raves about Quintos Spock, who draws all the attention in his scenes. The brief appearances of the visibly aged Leonard Nimoy as his alter ego Spock were described as impressive for fans at meetings. The premiere audience in Sydney applauded spontaneously.

In his review for IGN Movie UK , Orlando Parfitt is enthusiastic about Chris Pine as Kirk and especially Zachary Quinto as Spock: Thanks to good dialogues, the two form the heart of this successful new adaptation. At the same time he criticizes the complicated story and the weak opponent Nero, whereby the film fails as an exciting space adventure: "The plot is a complete mess."

In a review on Spiegel Online , David Kleingers describes the film as an exciting, fast-paced and "sexy" science fiction adventure that manages the balancing act between revolution and restoration of the legend. Thomas Klingenmaier also says in the Stuttgarter Zeitung : "As far as tricks and dynamics and the sheer desire for simplicity are concerned, Star Trek has much more to offer than previous implementations of Kirk's macho space travel." On the other hand, the film remains intellectually far behind other series like Battlestar Galactica back. He also criticizes the maneuverability, which seems exaggerated for a spaceship, "like a test car on the ADAC training ground." On Welt Online, Harald Peters criticizes the senseless action that is concealed by skillful staging: "Conveniently, Star Trek is a film that Does not want anything that means nothing, that is simply there and wants to be consumed without fuss. ”Etrit Hasler hardly finds any words of praise in the Swiss weekly newspaper : The film full of“ action film clichés ”tramples on the basic educational concept of the original series.

The lexicon of international films judged: “The central conflicts and main characters add little new ideas to the television series universe. Nonetheless, the fast-paced film impresses with its mixture of virtuoso action, tongue-in-cheek humor and coming-of-age drama, as well as original staging details. "

The fact that an alternative timeline was created and the characters from the original series were heavily modified, in combination with a story that was untypically weak for Star Trek, caused some criticism among Star Trek fans.

success

On the opening weekend, Star Trek grossed $ 79.2 million in North America, more than any other Star Trek film before. In Germany, 421,593 viewers saw the film on the opening weekend, a total of around 1.2 million. The worldwide box office including North America amounts to 385 million dollars. The film has been available on DVD and Blu-ray since November 2009 . As of December 20, 2009, it had made $ 82 million in the United States alone. According to the Hollywood Reporter , Star Trek is the Most Illegally Downloaded Movie on the Internet in 2009.

Books

The adaptation by Alan Dean Foster was published in early May both in the United States ( Pocket Books ) and in German-speaking countries ( Cross Cult ). As part of the film's marketing campaign, a four-part comic series entitled Star Trek: Countdown was released prior to launch . This tells the story of the story behind the film. The story is by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the comic was written by Tim Jones and Mike Johnson . David Messina was responsible for the drawings .

Awards

Like Star Trek IV: Back to the Present , the film was nominated for four Oscars (make-up, sound, sound editing, effects) and received the award in the best make-up category . This makes the eleventh part of the Star Trek series the first to be awarded an Oscar.

Sequels

The follow-up film Star Trek Into Darkness , which is based on the alternative timeline of Star Trek and in which the main actors can be seen again, celebrated its premiere on May 9, 2013.

The third part of the new edition is titled Star Trek Beyond and was released on July 21, 2016.

Easter Egg

Since Industrial Light & Magic was responsible for the special effects of Star Trek, an Easter egg was hidden in the film. Thus, R2-D2 , a character from Star Wars to see for a brief moment in the scene when the Enterprise delayed volcano reached and flies through the debris field. The scene in the hangar also shows how a cadet named Vader is assigned to the USS Hood .
