The first season of the American science fiction - television series Star Trek - The Next Generation was erstausgestrahlt in the United States beginning on 26 September 1987th

In the center of the action set in 2364 is the crew of the spaceship Enterprise , which is traveling in space and is confronted above all with unknown living beings and new civilizations. The encounters result from emergency calls, threats and the urge to discover. Often times, members of the crew endanger their lives. The season consists of the 90-minute pilot film and 24 additional 45-minute episodes, each of which tells a completed story.

In the Federal Republic of Germany , the pilot film and the following 12 episodes were first released on video cassettes in 1988 and 1989 . The synchronized version produced with these synchronized voices was not continued. Instead, ZDF started producing a new dubbed version, which was first broadcast in September 1990. The season was also released in full in 1995 on VHS , in 2002 on DVD and 2012 on Blu-ray .

Starfleet captain Jean-Luc Picard's first assignment with the newly commissioned spaceship Enterprise is to investigate why the backward inhabitants of the planet Deneb IV were able to build the advanced Farpoint station, and at the same time to bring some of the new crew members on board to take. During the flight to the planet, the Enterprise is stopped by the omnipotent being Q from the continuum of the same name , who accuses Picard and some of his officers of past crimes of humanity .

When the officers of the Enterprise try to solve the mystery of Farpoint , a creature appears in the orbit of the planet - initially in the form of a spaceship - which is much larger than the Enterprise and which bombs the city of the planet's inhabitants. They find out that the inhabitants of the planet once captured a similar but injured form of life and used its energy to build Farpoint Station. The being in orbit is now able to free its conspecifics , also with the help of the Enterprise . Q informs Picard that the Enterprise has passed its first test and hints at his future return.

When the Enterprise investigates the events on board another spaceship, the crew of which died of a mysterious disease, the crew members of the Enterprise become infected one after the other with the same pathogen and become intoxicated. With the help of Wesley Crusher, who is also infected, the team ultimately succeeds in averting a danger that would have destroyed the Enterprise .

The Enterprise visits the planet Ligon II to obtain a vaccine from its inhabitants that the Federation cannot produce itself. Tasha Yar is kidnapped by Lutan, the leader of the Ligonians, and chosen as his new wife. Since Lutan's previous wife does not agree, a duel ensues between her and Yar, which Yar wins. The Ligonians then made the serum available.

The Enterprise pursues a Ferengi spaceship with stolen goods on it to the planet Gamma Tauri IV. There both ships are held in place by a mysterious force, which threatens to break down the life support systems. In order to free themselves from the danger, the crews of both ships are forced to work together, and they meet the guardian of the Tkon Empire on the planet's surface. They can convince him that they have no threatening intentions, which releases the Enterprise from the force.

The Enterprise takes a ship propulsion expert from Starfleet and his assistant, called “The Traveler”, on board so that they can carry out tests to increase the efficiency of the warp drive . During the tests, through which the ship unintentionally flies into a distant, alien galaxy, the traveler is temporarily transported to another reality and the crew members suddenly begin to perceive their own thoughts as real. With the help of Wesley Crusher, with whom the traveler became friends, the traveler manages to transport the ship to its original position, but the traveler disappears.

During the passage of an energy cloud in space, a mysterious force comes on board the ship, this temporarily gains the consciousness of some crew members, one of whom is thereby killed. After the power has also seized Captain Picard, he lets the Enterprise fly back to the cloud in order to beam himself and Picard's body into the cloud and thus connect with his fellow-species; however, the crew can rescue Picard's body from the transporter buffer.

In his attempts to protect Wesley from the execution of his sentence, Picard is confronted both with the Federation's Supreme Directive and with a powerful, mysterious being in orbit around the planet protecting its inhabitants.

To the surprise of everyone aboard the Enterprise , the Ferengi DaiMon Bok gives Captain Picard the star fleet spaceship Stargazer , which Picard previously commanded and believed to be lost. With a mind manipulation device, Bok lets Picard mentally relive the battle in which Picard once had a Ferengi spaceship, which was commanded by Bok's son, destroyed with the Stargazer.

Q reappears and engages some of the bridge officers in a game on the surface of a planet where they are attacked by human-like beings . During the game, Q equips Riker with Q's skills and tests his ability to be included in the Q continuum. Finally, Q has to realize that his attempt failed.

The Enterprise arrives at the planet Haven and takes on board a wedding party that includes Deanna Troi's mother Lwaxana. There is also Wyatt, whom Deanna is supposed to marry as part of a forced marriage. As a Tarellian spaceship, previously believed to have been plagued by a plague, approaches the planet, Wyatt beams himself onto the spaceship. There he had previously recognized his true love.

To recover from the stress of trying to communicate with the insectoid Jarada, Picard, accompanied by Data, Dr. Crusher and a historian take a break in the holodeck. While they try their hand at detective work there in America in the 1940s , the Enterprise is scanned by the Jarada, with the Holodeck visitors being trapped on it. Wesley Crusher and La Forge work feverishly to free them.

On the planet Omicron Theta, on the Data of Dr. Soong had been created, the Enterprise crew wants to investigate the former disappearance of the colonists. She also discovers Lore, Data's older brother. After being reactivated, he immediately succeeds in deactivating Data and taking its place. As such, he summons the crystalline being that once destroyed the colonists and deactivated Lore.

In search of missing spaceship occupants, the Enterprise visits the matriarchal planet Angel I, on which dominant women rule the men. The survivors, who now have relationships and families with the women of the planet, refuse to return because they reject the feminine form of rule. Meanwhile, a viral disease breaks out on the Enterprise .

While the Enterprise is docked at Starbase 74 for repairs, some binary beings are also boarding to help with the repairs. They hijack the Enterprise and fly to their home planet. They use the Enterprise's computer to back up the supernova- threatened computer on their planet. With the help of Picard and Riker, the binary beings are saved and the planet's computer restarted.

The frail Admiral Mark Jameson and his wife come aboard the Enterprise to be transported to the planet Morgan IV, where he is supposed to act as an arbitrator in a hostage situation. During the flight, the admiral becomes visibly younger due to the use of drugs . With this he intends to be able to carry out his arbitration mandate optimally.

When the Enterprise meets the inhabitants of the planet Aldea, they kidnap Wesley and several other children of the ship. The Aldeans plan to use the children for the continuation of their race, as they themselves have not been able to have children for some time. Picard and his crew manage to free the children from the clutches of the Aldeans and to identify the cause of the Aldeans' problem as the contamination of their atmosphere.

On the planet Velara III visited Enterprise crew the local terraforming -Station whose team would like to convert the hostile planet in a habitable world. During the visit, an engineer dies from a laser running amok. While investigating the incident, Data and LaForge encounter a form of life that then declares war on the people and threatens to destroy the Enterprise .

On the planet Relva VII, Wesley takes the entrance exam for the Starfleet Academy, but ultimately has to admit defeat to a competitor. Meanwhile, Starfleet Admiral Quinn and his associate are interrogating the senior officers of the Enterprise , supposedly to uncover a conspiracy. Finally, he makes Picard an offer to take up a management position in the academy, but Picard refuses.

In the neutral zone, the Enterprise discovers three Klingons on a spaceship that is about to explode. When another Klingon spaceship appears, it demands the surrender of the Klingons rescued by the exploded spaceship because they are rebels who are to be imprisoned. When the two surviving Klingons try to flee, they are shot by crew members of the Enterprise .

While the crew of the Enterprise is looking for the missing spaceship USS Drake , they discover a weapon system that automatically attacks them on the planet Minos. Picard and Dr. Crusher into an underground vault, where they can finally stop the attack and prevent the Enterprise from being destroyed.

The Enterprise takes two ornarans and two brekkars on board, along with a cargo that is a drug that the ornarans consider essential. The brekkars are demanding that the cargo be returned because it has not been paid for. It turns out that the drug only thrives on the Brekkarian planet, which it is offered for sale to maintain the ornaran dependence.

Crashed on a planet with their shuttle ship, Troi and a companion are held captive by a black, shape-changing creature. While trying to overcome the creature, Tasha Yar is murdered by him before Picard can free the prisoners with the help of his crew and a ruse.

During a space flight, the Enterprise temporarily gets into a strange time warp . It turns out that the phenomenon is related to problems at the scientific outpost on the planet Vandor IV. Manheim, Lieutenant Commander Data can solve the cause of the problem. Meanwhile, Picard is confronted with his feelings for Manheim's wife.

After Picard's old friend, Captain Keel, warns him of a conspiracy in Starfleet and is shortly afterwards killed by the implosion of his spaceship, Data discovers that Starfleet Command has made a series of mysterious personnel decisions based on a secret pattern, through which the Federation is threatened. When they arrived on earth and invited by admirals to dinner, Picard and Riker soon realized that the processes were controlled by a parasitic form of life that has taken root in the bodies of the admirals.

On the way to a meeting with the Romulans, the crew of the Enterprise is confronted with three people whom they had previously rescued from a cold sleep. Convincing them that they are in a spaceship, live in the 24th century and that humanity has left the urge for material wealth behind, turns out to be difficult for Picard and his followers.

The season was sold on various storage media in stores in German-speaking countries, mostly under the English series title.

First German-language VHS release

The first 14 episodes were dubbed in German in 1987/88 and released on video cassettes by CIC .

Other VHS releases

The season synchronized by ZDF was released in Germany in 1995 on video cassettes. Each cassette contained two episodes. The cassettes appeared at intervals of several weeks.

DVD

In the German-speaking countries, the season was first released on DVD on March 25, 2002. On the second DVD of the first season box of this issue, the German sound of the episode Das Gesetz der Edo was played asynchronously for almost four minutes; The distributor therefore included a replacement DVD with the correct sound in every box of the second season. A new release took place on April 9, 2009 in the form of two sub-boxes (Season 1.1 and 1.2). It was also released as part of the complete boxes The Full Journey (December 2012), 20th Anniversary Box (September 2007) and Serienstick (2003). The pilot was also released as part of the Star Trek - Next Generation Moviebox (2003).

Blu-ray

The season first appeared on Blu-ray in German-speaking countries on July 26, 2012 . On October 19, 2012, Amazon.de was published in a steel book as a container. The pilot film was released on January 31, 2012 as part of the pre-released Blu-ray "The Next Level: Insight into the Next Generation".

On the occasion of the first German VHS release in 1988 and 1989, the lexicon of international films judged : “A naive fairy tale with endless dialogues and technical bells and whistles. A rather disappointing revitalization. " " TV adventure staged with the usual infantile dramaturgy and the usual technical hocus-pocus. " " Stereotypical entertainment with stilted dialogues and slow action. The time was divided into two parts when the German first broadcast began in 1990. The series is "well-made entertainment, but not more than any science fiction series with lots of special effects." The female main characters are designed to be somewhat colorless; The idea of taking the families of the crew members on board is annoying.
