history

Since film distribution outside the North American continent was not of great importance for the US film studios until the 1960s , the previously independent international distribution subsidiaries of Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures were brought into the Cinema International Corporation in April 1970. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer joined the rental company in 1973. The three companies were equal partners. The company's headquarters were in London , UK . The establishment of the company was preceded by lengthy negotiations between the representatives of the individual companies. These were Lew Wasserman for Universal Pictures, Charles Bluhdorn for Paramount Pictures, and Kirk Kerkorian and Jim Aubrey for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

After the film company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, controlled by Kirk Kerkorian, acquired United Artists from the Transamerica Corporation in 1981 , MGM wanted to fall back on the international distribution arm of the UA. But the contracts with the Cinema International Corporation said that all of MGM's theatrical films are exploited through the CIC in the international cinema market. Therefore, the distribution activities of the United Artists were discontinued and some of its staff switched to Cinema International Corporation. From now on, the distribution company took care of the distribution of the films by Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and United Artists.

In 1981 the company was renamed United International Pictures . From then on, Cinema International Corporation operated as a film distributor on the home entertainment market for the two film studios Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures. CIC Video was the company's short name.

In 1999 this alliance was terminated and both film studios distributed their products under their own direction. CIC Video became Paramount Home Entertainment. With the takeover of PolyGram, Universal Pictures had independent sales for its home entertainment products and introduced its own name and label into sales.
