Pilot episode

The pilot episode The Cage was completed between November 1964 and January 1965, and the lead roles played Jeffrey Hunter (Captain Christopher Pike), Majel Barrett (number one) and Leonard Nimoy as Spock . After the episode was rejected by NBC among other things as too intellectual , Jeffrey Hunter withdrew from the role of Pike. The idea behind Gene Roddenberry was asked to produce another pilot episode ( The Tip of the Iceberg ). The episode aired later after the series began.

The episode The Cage never aired during the regular series run. Roddenberry showed a black - working copy on various science fiction meeting after the series was canceled. It was not until 1986 that Paramount Home Video released a revised version, consisting of the black and white recordings and colored scenes from the episode Talos IV-Tabu and an introduction by Roddenberry.

In October 1988 Paramount aired a two-hour special, with Patrick Stewart as host, which showed the episode completely in color for the first time.
