Jerome Bixby

Drexel Jerome Lewis Bixby (* 11. January 1923 in Los Angeles County , California , USA ; † 28. April 1998 in San Bernardino , California, USA) was an American writer - and science fiction - author .

Bixby served in the Air Force Medical Corps during World War II . After the war he studied composition and piano at the Juilliard School of Music . A hand injury forced him to give up his planned career as a musician.

Bixby published his first SF story Tubemonkey in 1949 in Planet Stories magazine ; In the following years he wrote numerous SF stories as well as western and adventure stories for a number of Pulps . He used pseudonyms such as DB Lewis, Harry Neal, Albert Russell, J. Russell, M. St. Vivant, Thornecliff Herrick and Alger Rome (the latter in a collaboration with Algis Budrys ). 1950–1951 he was editor of Planet Stories , later also of The Complete Science-Adventure Books , Thrilling Wonder Stories and Startling Stories .

Bixby wrote the script for It! In 1958 . The Terror from Beyond Space , provided the basis for the SF film The Fantastic Journey from 1966 and was involved as a writer on the television series Men Into Space and Twilight Zone . He wrote four episodes for Spaceship Enterprise and brought in the concept of the mirror universe , which was used again and again in subsequent series. Shortly before his death, he also completed the template for the film The Man from Earth , which was directed by Richard Schenkman (the German DVD release is entitled Jerome Bixby's Man from Earth ).

Jerome Bixby had four sons, the eldest of whom, Emerson Bixby , is now a filmmaker and was an executive producer on The Man from Earth . Jerome Bixby died of heart failure after bypass surgery at the age of 75 .
