Raymond Z. Gallun

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Raymond Zinke Gallun (born March 22, 1911 in Beaver Dam , Wisconsin ; died April 2, 1994 in Forest Hills , New York ) was an American science fiction writer.

Life

Gallun was the son of the farmer Adolph Gallun and Martha Emmalina Louisa, née Zinke. He studied 1929/1930 at the University of Wisconsin and 1938/1939 French at Alliance Française in Paris . From 1942 to 1943 he worked as a construction worker for the Army Corps of Engineers and in 1944 he was a shipyard worker at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard . In 1960 he studied again at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima . From 1964 to 1975 he was a technical writer for a manufacturer of sonar devices . In the meantime he worked in various jobs and made numerous trips. As he himself said: "Otherwise a long and colorful history of professional and other vagabondage, overall quite enjoyable, if not praiseworthy."

In 1959 he married Frieda Ernestine Talmey. After her death in 1974 he married Bertha Erickson Backman in 1978.

Gallun's SF stories appeared in the pulp magazines of the era from the late 1930s . Much of his work appeared in the period up to 1943, then some again in the 1950s and, after a break of almost 20 years, about half a dozen from the late 1970s. In total, Gallun published over 120 short stories and four novels. A first collection appeared in 1978, The Best of Raymond Z. Gallun , which was followed by more from 2009. His best-known work is the Old Faithful series, three short stories about a likeable Martian and his descendants, which are also included in the best-of anthology from 1978. A posthumous autobiography completed by Jeffrey M. Elliot, Starclimber: The Literary Adventures and Autobiography of Raymond Z. Gallun , appeared in 1991.

In 1979 he received the First Fandom Hall of Fame Award . In 1985 he received the I-CON Award for his life's work at I-CON IV , which was later renamed the Raymond Z. Gallun Award .
