Algis Budrys, 1985

Algirdas Jonas Budrys (born on 9. January 1931 in Königsberg , East Prussia , died on 9. June 2008 in Evanston , Illinois ) was an American science fiction - writers , who published his works under the abbreviated form of his name Algis Budrys.

Life

Algis Budrys was born in Königsberg in 1931 as a Lithuanian citizen under the name Algirdas Jonas Budrys . His father was the local consul of the Lithuanian government, later a member of the Lithuanian government in exile (Budrys was originally the code name - Lithuanian for sentry). In 1936 the family emigrated to the USA and officially adopted the code name there.

Budrys received his education from 1947 to 1951 at the University of Miami and later at Columbia University in New York . During and after his studies he first worked for the American Express Company, from 1952 as a lecturer and manager at several science fiction publishers, but also began to write. He started at Gnome Press , which was one of the first publishers to publish SF in hardcover . He then worked in the 1950s for Galaxy , venture , t hey Magazine Of Fantasy And Science Fiction and Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine . Jobs for Regency Books, Playboy Press and auto magazines were added in the 1960s. From 1993 to 2000 he was the publisher of Tomorrow Speculative Fiction magazine, which continued to exist online after 24 printed editions.

Budrys was the author of nine novels, five collections of short stories, over 200 short stories and hundreds of reviews, which have also appeared in several volumes. His novels were nominated for Hugo and Nebula Awards. Who? , a classic science fiction novel, was used as a model for the 1973 movie The Man of Metal , starring Elliott Gould and Trevor Howard (directed by Jack Gold ). Budrys has also taught at Columbia University in Chicago , Harvard University, and others.

Algis Budrys was married with four sons and lived in Evanston , Illinois . He died of complications from skin cancer in 2008 and was buried in Maryhill Catholic Cemetery in Niles .

Budrys also published under the pseudonyms Frank Mason , Paul Janvier , William Scarff , Robert Marner , David C. Hodgkins as well as Alger Rome (when working with Jerome Bixby ) and John A. Sentry (see above: 'Sentry' means 'sentry') .
