Theodore R. Cogswell

Theodore Rose Cogswell (born March 10, 1918 in Coatesville , Pennsylvania ; died February 3, 1987 in Scranton , Pennsylvania) was an American science fiction writer.

Life

Cogswell served on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War from 1937 to 1939 in the Lincoln Battalion . During World War II he served in the US Air Force from 1942 to 1946 and was stationed in India, Burma and China. In 1948 he received his BA from the University of Colorado . In 1949 he graduated with an MA from the University of Minnesota and was then a doctoral student until 1953, then a lecturer at the University of Kentucky until 1956 and at the University of Denver until 1957. From 1958 to 1965 he was an assistant professor of English on the ball State College and Keystone Junior College in La Plume, Pennsylvania from 1965 . He lived in Chinchilla, Pennsylvania.

During his time as a PhD student at the University of Minnesota, he met the SF writers Gordon R. Dickson and Poul Anderson , who encouraged him to write. In 1952 he published his first short story, The Specter General, on Astounding Science Fiction . Like this first one, many of the more than 40 short stories published up to 1981 show a tendency towards the satirical and humorous. His SF stories were collected in The Wall Around the World (1962) and The Third Eye (1968). In addition to his short stories, Cogswell also published a number of SF ballads .

With Charles A. Spano, Jr., he wrote Spock, Messiah! In 1976 . , the second volume in the series of Star Trek novels published by Bantam . He also wrote a script for the television series Tales of Tomorrow ( Red Dust , 1952).

From 1959 to 1962, Cogswell published a fanzine for professional SF writers under the title Publications of the Institute of Twenty-First Century Studies , mostly abbreviated to PITFCS , in which contributions by Brian W. Aldiss , Poul Anderson , Isaac Asimov , James Blish , Anthony Boucher , Reginald Bretnor , Algis Budrys , John W. Campbell Jr. , Arthur C. Clarke , Avram Davidson , Gordon R. Dickson , Horace L. Gold , Robert A. Heinlein , Damon Knight , Fritz Leiber , Dean McLaughlin , Judith Merril , Frederik Pohl , Eric Frank Russell , Theodore Sturgeon and Donald A. Wollheim appeared. The magazine was valued as a kind of internal forum, in which one could exchange relatively freely and bluntly about one's own work and the work of others. The last volume with older material appeared in 1979. In 1992 an anthology appeared with all editions except one, the subject of which was a particularly bitter controversy surrounding Walter M. Miller .

Cogswell was married twice and had two daughters.
