Gordon R. Dickson, 1974

Gordon Rupert Dickson (* 1. November 1923 in Edmonton , Alberta , † 31 January 2001 in Richfield , Minnesota ) was a Canadian science fiction - and fantasy - author .

Life

He grew up in Canada and moved with his family to the USA at the age of 13 after the death of his father, who was a mining engineer, studied English and creative writing at the University of Minnesota , was a soldier from 1943 to 1945 and acquired the BA . During this time he met (the later SF authors) Clifford D. Simak and Poul Anderson , whom he was on friendly terms throughout his life. After finishing his studies he became a freelance writer. Dickson was one of the founders of the American SF authors' association SFWA , of which he was president from 1969 to 1971. Dickson won a total of three Hugo Awards , a Nebula Award and a British Fantasy Award .

Dickson's first short story Trespass appeared in Fantastic Stories Quarterly in 1950 . Dickson wrote the story with Anderson. Dickson's first novel Alien from Arcturus (dt. Strangers from Arcturus ) was published in 1956. Dickson most famous work is the Childe cycle, the main part of the Dorsai consists cycle. In this series, Dickson wanted to describe all of human history well into the future, but could not finish it.

Gordon R. Dickson suffered from asthma for many years of his life. He died on January 31, 2001 in Richfield, Minnesota.

plant

Gordon R. Dickson is counted among the future historians in the genre , such as Isaac Asimov with his Foundation cycle, because his main work, the six-volume Dorsai cycle, tells a future story of mankind. The Dorsai cycle is part of the twelve-volume Childe cycle planned by Dickson, which should encompass the entire history of mankind. Dickson , like many others, attended Damon Knight's Milford Writing Conferences in the mid- 1960s . A short time later he won the Nebula Award for the short story Call him Lord (1966), which fueled the rumors that there was a "Milford Mafia", as most of the Nebula Awards of that time were won by attendees at the Milford Conferences. Brian W. Aldiss calls Dickson together with Fritz Leiber , Poul Anderson , Jack Vance and Philip José Farmer "... real legendary monsters ..." of science fiction, since they dare to undertake projects "... that no mainstream author would tackle". Dickson's work is firmly anchored in the Campbellian tradition. In 2000 he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.

bibliography

Childe cycle (includes the Dorsai cycle)

Hans Joachim Alpers wrote in 1982: (...) The focus of his work [Gordon R. Dickson] is a history of mankind based on a total of twelve works. The core works are also known as the "Dorsai cycle". (...) His complete work is about the representation of the evolution of man from the Renaissance to the 23rd century, whereby this evolution is supposed to reflect the becoming and the perfection of the new man, the “responsible man”. It is not known whether this cycle has been completed, as many titles have not yet been published in German.
