Mack Reynolds

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dallas McCord "Mack" Reynolds (born November 11, 1917 in Corcoran , California , † January 30, 1983 in San Luis Potosí , Mexico ) was an American science fiction writer who was particularly successful in the 1960s.

Life

Reynolds initially worked as an editor for a local newspaper. This was followed by a job at IBM , later he worked as a foreign editor for the men's magazine Rogue , for which he traveled a lot through Europe and Africa. During the Second World War he was in the merchant navy. Reynolds was married twice and had three children.

His first science fiction story Isolation appeared in Fantastic Adventures magazine in 1950 . This was followed by the novel The Case of the Little Green Men , a kind of detective story set in a science fiction fan milieu.

Many of Reynolds' novels deal with the ideal of utopian society. The series about “Section G” is about a secret organization of the “United Planets”, whose task ostensibly is to guarantee the independence of the various planets. In the future described there are examples of practically every form of society and government ever devised. Authoritarian theocracies coexist with anarchist planets that are committed to Bakunin's ideal .

The hero's job, Ronald Bronston, is in the first novel in the series - Worlds in Riot - to look for a revolutionary named after Thomas Paine who seems to initiate uprisings against the respective government at random. Reynolds takes the search for Thomas Paine as an opportunity to present his historical and philosophical views. It turns out that Section G itself is behind Thomas Paine. Change as such is seen as progress, not the goal of an alternative form of society.

In Of Godlike Power (alternative title: Earth Unaware ) is about a religious founder, who has the power to impose his opinion unwelcome social phenomena with a "curse" by mass hypnosis. Among other things, he is doing away with radio, television and literature (except classic, such as Huckleberry Finn). Reynolds also includes examples from history, such as Father Divine or the Nika uprising in Byzantium.

Reynolds was the first author to write an original novel based on the television series Starship Enterprise : Mission to Horatius (1968).

Together with Frederic Brown , he brought out the humorous short story collection Science Fiction Carneval .
