Life
Hall attended Birkenhead School , a co-educational private school in the county of Merseyside in northwest Britain , and Keble College of the University of Oxford , where he became an interdisciplinary study in the fields of philosophy , political science and economics ( Philosophy, Politics and Economics graduated, PPE).
After graduating, he joined the BBC as a trainee in 1973 . In 1984 he became Senior Producer of Six O'Clock News , 1985 Editor of 9 O'Clock News . From 1987 to 1990 he was an editor in the News and Current Affairs department, then from 1990 to 1996 Director of News and Current Affairs. In 1993 he became Management Director on the BBC Board of Management for News. He held this position until 1996. From 1996 to 2001 he was Chief Executive Director for News and Current Affairs at the BBC.
His successes included the introduction of the programs BBC Parliament (1992) and BBC Radio 5 Live (1994). In 1999 he ran for the position of Director General of the BBC.
In April 2001, Hall became director of the Royal Opera House . He created the ROH2 department, which was specifically dedicated to promoting young artists and attracting new audiences. Since then, he has launched several initiatives to attract a broader audience, for example by broadcasting opera performances on outside screens , by introducing the Paul Hamlyn matinées and by offering tickets at reduced prices. This included in particular the sale of unsold tickets at reduced prices to schoolchildren and students, tickets for families and special performances for visitor organizations.
In 2007 Hall bought the renowned DVD label Opus Arte for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden . With this purchase, Hall primarily wanted to open up new target groups and expand the digital opera offering as a whole. As part of the advertising strategy , Hall planned live broadcasts of opera performances, as well as DVD screenings in cinemas and video-on-demand facilities .
In April 2007, following an incident in the north of the Persian Gulf in which 15 members of the Royal Navy were arrested by members of the Armed Forces of Iran , Hall was tasked with investigating the UK Ministry of Defense's strategy for dealing with the media . Hall concluded in his report that the fact that members of the armed forces with knowledge of the UK Defense Department could sell their story to the media for money had snubbed the public and damaged the reputation of the British armed forces.
In July 2009, Hall was entrusted by the British Government and the Mayor of London with the creation and chairmanship of the body to lead the Cultural Olympiad for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Hall's job was to get the cultural supporting program off the ground. He also became a member of the board of directors of the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games .
