George Entwistle (born July 8, 1962 ) is a British media manager. From September to November 2012 he was Director General of the BBC .

Life

Entwistle grew up in Yorkshire and attended Silcoates School in Wakefield . He studied philosophy and politics at the University of Durham . He started as a journalist at Haymarket Magazines and in 1989 he joined the British broadcaster BBC as a trainee.

On September 17, 2012, Entwistle was named director general of the BBC, succeeding Mark Thompson . In the course of two scandals, he resigned from this post on November 10th.

The two scandals:

  • In September 2012, ITV TV reported allegations of child abuse against Jimmy Savile , a BBC star who died in October 2011. This was followed by contradicting statements by the BBC about the reasons for which similar research on the BBC program Newsnight was canceled in December 2011 and a planned program was not broadcast at the time. At the time, Entwistle was already in a senior position at the BBC.
  • On November 2, 2012, the BBC falsely accused a former Conservative Party ("Tories") politician of child abuse in a report on Newsnight .

Entwistle received a " golden handshake " equal to an annual salary, namely £ 450,000. This was criticized by a spokesman for the Prime Minister and the Minister of Culture, among others.

Tim Davie became the interim boss. On November 22, 2012, Tony Hall , director of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden from 2001 to 2012 , was appointed the new director general of the BBC .
