The town of Corcoran in Kings County, California is best known for its two correctional facilities:
- California State Prison Corcoran (CSP-COR), designated for 3,116 prisoners, actually occupied with 4,851 inmates as of July 31, 2011, 2,322 employees, annual operating expenses of $ 274 million (2008/2009),
- California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran (SATF-CSP, Corcoran), designated for 3,424 inmates, actually occupied by 6,335 inmates as of July 31, 2011, 1,925 employees, annual operating expenses of $ 148 million (2008/2009).
The total of 11,186 inmates are considered residents of the city. In September 2007, the two institutions together had 13,144 inmates, which was more than half of the population of 25,417 at the time.
With a total of 4,247 employees, the two penal institutions are also by far the largest employer in the city.
