geography

Corona is located in northwestern Riverside County in Southern California . The city is bordered by Norco and Riverside to the northeast, Chino Hills to the northwest, and Yorba Linda and the Cleveland National Forest to the southwest. Nearby small communities also include Home Gardens and El Cerrito . A little east of the city is Lake Mathews . The urban area extends over an area of 100.829 km², of which 100.558 km² are land.

City structure

Corona is divided into three districts.

North Corona

City limits in the north of Corona

The northern borough borders Norco and is north of California State Route 91 . It consists largely of settlements, but is also used commercially. The population increasingly belongs to the middle to higher middle income bracket and lives in houses that were mainly built after the late 1990s. North Corona is considered well-kept and very safe. Most of the residents are white, and some are Asian-Americans . The district offers well-rated schools and plenty of shopping opportunities.

Central Corona

The central part of the city includes the inner circle of Grand Avenue, all areas south of California State Route 91 and north of Ontario Avenue. Of the three districts, Central Corona is by far the oldest; most of the houses were built around 1910. The district is mostly inhabited by Hispanics and whites. The residents often live in restored houses.

South Corona

The urban area south of Ontario Avenue forms the most modern and upscale district (South Corona). Most of the buildings here were only built in this millennium and give the district the character of a suburb, but some areas in the foreland consist more of specially built mansions. The best-rated schools in the entire city, including some in the region, are located here. South Corona is known to be clean, homogeneous, and well-maintained. The residents increasingly belong to the upper middle to higher income bracket and have European ancestors.

climate

Corona has a warm Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers, but in winter there may be frost, so that snowfall is possible on the surrounding mountains. Usually, however, temperatures remain in the range of 18  ° C even at this time . In summer, the average maximum values are between 30 and 35  ° C . In the warmest months, however, it can reach  temperatures of over 40 ° C ; the record level of 2006 is 47  ° C . In Corona, as in all of Southern California, rain falls mostly from winter to early spring.

history

Corona was founded in 1886 when citrus fruits were enjoying a huge boom in California. Advantageously, the city is at the top of the Santa Ana River Canyon, the only significant pass through the Santa Ana Mountains . Corona once claimed the title "Lemon Capital of the World"; a museum in the city still shows the importance of lemon to the local economy.

Houses at the intersection of Victoria Street and Grand Boulevard, 1909

The city owes its name and nickname The Circle City to its unusual street system, which is largely based on the typical grid , i.e. a grid-like street network, but with the Grand Boulevard in the middle also a road ring with a diameter of 1.6 km and 4, Includes 8 km route length. Three international automobile races were held here in 1913, 1914 and 1916. Corona's road network was designed by Hiram Clay Kellogg. He was from Anaheim and was one of the most influential figures in the early development of neighboring Orange County .

The city has its origins in May 1886, when the South Riverside Land and Water Company was founded and its members around the former governor of Iowa , Samuel Merrill bought the Rancho La Sierra and the Rancho Temescal. This area became South Riverside. They also secured the water rights to Temescal Creek , its tributaries and Lee Lake. Pipelines and dams brought the water to South Riverside. Eventually the organization acquired rights to all the water in the Temescal Valley and began drilling artesian wells . In 1896, South Riverside was renamed Corona, and the city was founded in the same year.

Celebrities value Corona for its upscale areas and privacy compared to Los Angeles . Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball spent time on their ranch in the South Corona neighborhood and played golf at the Cresta Verde Golf Course in the northeast of the city. After their divorce, Arnaz continued to live in Corona.

In recent years, Corona has come to be known as the gateway to the Inland Empire . Before the 1980s, the city was dominated by fruit orchards and farms. High property prices in Los Angeles and Orange Counties later made the country attractive to the industrial sector.

Corona has developed into a commuter city over time, as many of the residents work in surrounding cities and counties . The city's development was accelerated by its connection to these areas via California State Route 91 . Many companies moved their locations away from northern Orange County to be closer to where their employees live in Corona and Riverside . The Pomona and San Gabriel Valley are also easily accessible via California State Route 71 .

In November 2008, Corona was the first city of the forest fires in Southern California was hit.

The city has been the administrative headquarters of the World Mosquito Control Association since it was founded in 2015 .

Proposals for Establishing a Corona County

In 2002, there were plans to split Corona from Riverside County and start its own Corona County, as dissatisfaction with the services was voiced. Other cities in western Riverside County, such as Murrieta , had similar plans. The new county would have bordered San Bernardino County in the northwest and Orange County in the west, and nearby cities like Norco might also have become part of a Corona County. However, the split never took place.

politics

Corona is part of the 37th district in the California Senate , currently represented by Republican Bill Emmerson, and the 71st district of the California State Assembly , represented by Republican Jeff Miller. Corona also belongs to California's 44th Congressional constituency , which has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R + 6 and is represented by Republican Ken Calvert .

Railway station in Corona

Corona is located on California State Routes 71 and 91 as well as Interstate 15 and the 91 line of Metrolink , which connects Los Angeles with Riverside .

The city center is surrounded by the Grand Boulevard ring road .

The idea of building a 10-mile (10-mile) tunnel for cars and bullet trains under Santiago Peak to connect Interstate 15 in Corona with Interstate 5 and California State Route 55 in Orange County was discussed . This venture could divert traffic off the heavily congested California State Route 91 specifically for commuters.

The city has its own airfield, Corona Municipal Airport , with a 980 m long runway. On January 20, 2008, two small passenger planes collided over Corona, all four people on board died.
