The San Gabriel Mountains are a mountain range in California . As part of the Transverse Ranges , they are located in northern Los Angeles County and western San Bernardino County .

The formation delimits the Greater Los Angeles Area from the Mojave Desert . The San Andreas Fault runs between the latter and the northern limit of the mountains ; to the east are the San Bernardino Mountains . The entire region lies within the Angeles National Forest , which is a popular recreational area, especially for residents of the nearby city of Los Angeles . The highest mountain is Mount San Antonio at 3,067 meters , which is also popularly called Mt. Baldy. Another well-known mountain is Mount Wilson , 1749 meters high , on which the Mount Wilson Observatory is built.

Transport and tourism

The California State Route 2 or the portion thereof Angeles Crest Highway is the only road that leads through the central San Gabriel Mountains. The road condition is poor in places, the route is winding. The Angeles Crest Highway is closed in winter due to falling rocks and the risk of avalanches. Another important stretch of road is the Angeles Forest Highway , which runs from its junction with the Angeles Crest Highway to near Acton and thus connects the Antelope Valley and the surrounding forests with Los Angeles.

The Interstate 15 crosses the mountains in its eastern part. It is the main traffic route between the eastern Los Angeles metropolitan area and the Sonoran Desert .

Mt. Baldy and Mountain High are some of the most popular winter sports areas in the San Gabriel Mountains. In summer the mountain region is also well visited by hikers and day trippers.
