The Antelope Valley ("Valley of the Antelopes") is located in northern Los Angeles County of California and southeastern Kern County . It also represents the westernmost tip of the Mojave Desert . The valley lies between the Tehachapi Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains . Embedded are the urbanized areas of Palmdale and Lancaster .
The valley was named after the forked antelopes that roamed there until they became extinct in the 1880s due to bad weather and constant hunting.
