history
The settlement was built in the late 19th century as a water station and stop on the Southern Pacific Transportation railroad between Los Angeles and San Francisco . Lancaster, which received city rights in 1977 , has seen rapid growth since the 1970s, many of whom work in the aircraft industry. The population rose from about 37,000 in 1977 to 45,000 in 1980 and 97,000 in 1990. Lancaster is the eighth largest city in the county and the ninth fastest growing city in the United States. Of all the cities with the name Lancaster , it is the largest in the world. Also, due to relatively low property prices, Lancaster has long been popular with young families and commuters who travel to Los Angeles for work every day. However, from around 2007 onwards , the real estate crisis resulted in a significant increase in the number of foreclosures.
Attractions
One of Lancaster's attractions is the Aerospace Walk of Honor, inaugurated in 1990 on Lancaster Boulevard. It is reminiscent of test pilots who have made a significant contribution to research and development in the aerospace industry.
economy
In addition to the aerospace industry, the US Air Force has long been one of the most important employers in Lancaster . As early as 1930, it carried out test flights near Lancaster at the then Muroc Air Field , which is now generally known as Edwards Air Force Base . Many Lancaster residents work in neighboring Palmdale , which is home to major Boeing , Lockheed and Northrop Grumman offices.
On the outskirts there is a production facility of the Chinese company BYD Auto . The system is technically designed for the annual assembly of up to 1000 BYD ebus buses . Another important local branch of the economy is the logistics industry , which is represented, among other things, by a logistics center of the drugstore chain Rite Aid .
The place is trying to revitalize its city center. The Lancaster Old Town Site (LOTS) initiative is promoting not only the settlement of small shops and restaurants, but also the renovation of old house facades .
