The forest area is overgrown with dense chaparral , which turns into conifers with increasing height. There predominantly Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi) , coastal pine (Pinus contorta) , Colorado fir (Abies concolor) and the common Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) grow .
The forest was established on July 1, 1908 as the first California national forest and the second in the United States. For this reason it is also listed as a California Historical Landmark . It arose from the amalgamation of the San Bernardino Forest Reserve with parts of the San Gabriel Forest Reserve and the Santa Barbara Forest Reserve. The Angeles National Forest attracts around 3.5 to 4 million visitors annually and has been the location for many films and series, including On the Run , Bonanza , Duel , Star Trek: First Contact and Mission: Impossible II .
