The Sierra Pelona Mountains are a mountain range in Los Angeles County and Kern County in southern California . The 1937 km² mountain range extends from Interstate 5 in Gorman to the Antelope Valley Freeway in Vincent . The north-south extension is 57 km, the east-west 70 km. The Sierra Pelona Mountains are bounded in the south by the San Gabriel Mountains , in the southwest by the Santa Clarita Valley , by the San Emigdio Mountains in the northwest and by the Antelope Valley in the north and northeast. The San Andreas Fault is north of the range at Elizabeth Lake . The Sierra Pelona Mountains are often incorrectly counted as part of the San Gabriel Mountains, which are separated from the Sierra Pelona Mountains by the Soledad Canyon . In winter the highest points are mostly covered with snow, while in summer and autumn there is a risk of forest fires, as the dry, hot Santa Ana winds draw moisture away from the plants.
