BYD Auto Company Limited , short: BYD Auto ( Chinese  比亞迪 汽車  /  比亚迪 汽车 , Pinyin Bǐyǎdí Qìchē ), is a car manufacturer in Shenzhen in the province of Guangdong in the People's Republic of China and a subsidiary of BYD Company Ltd. The company is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in China and is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange . In 2015, BYD Auto was the global leader in the sale of electrically chargeable vehicles, a position that has since been surrendered to Nissan . In the field of electromobility , it is regarded as one of the most innovative companies - not least due to the market launch of the world's first electric semitrailer tractor , the first articulated electric bus and the first double-decker electric bus .

BYD is the acronym for: Build your dreams .

history

In January 2003, BYD , which had previously specialized in the manufacture of batteries, bought the ailing state-owned automobile manufacturer Xian Qinhuan Automobile . This branch of the company has been operating as a subsidiary under BYD Auto Co. Ltd ever since .

When BYD bought the state-owned company, it was less about the acquisition of technical know-how than about the state license to manufacture automobiles, which at the time was usually only granted within the framework of joint ventures . First, the production of the unsuccessful microcar Flyer was taken over and continued under the name BYD Flyer . However, the model went largely unnoticed with low sales.

In the years that followed, the company avoided the faster route of using licensed buildings from global corporations, instead relying on in-house developments in the long term. As with other Chinese companies, the first phase was replicas of foreign car brands: In our own research and development centers , selected models from other manufacturers were dismantled, all patented components were replaced with custom-made in-house developments and reassembled as a new model. The BYD F3 developed at the end of 2005 was largely an imitation of the Toyota Corolla, and the BYD M6 , released in 2010, looks very similar to the Toyota Previa . This approach enabled a quick learning process that led to the development of its own technology: as early as 2007, the automotive company already owned more than 2000 patents on its own developments.

In contrast to most other automobile manufacturers who use products from the supplier industry , BYD Auto produces most of the components itself; In addition to motors, transmissions, control and braking systems and the entire vehicle electronics, this includes windshield wipers, seat belts, airbags and CD players (only tires, car glass and a few general components are procured externally.)

The labor-intensive (and for Western companies too cost-intensive) in-house production of many components in relatively small quantities required for this was made possible by production processes that the parent company BYD already practiced in the field of battery production : The process sections in production were made so strong by means of an extremely detailed description of the workflow the fact that young people with little or no professional qualifications are also employed. This allows the semi-automatic production of auto parts, which are qualitatively comparable to the products manufactured by industrial robots (as a rule by other manufacturers) , but can be offered more cost-effectively due to the low wages in China .

In order to improve further independence from suppliers and to achieve a largely self-sufficient production process , BYD Auto acquired the Japanese company Ogihara Corp. on March 10, 2010 . a factory for the production of original vehicle parts . At the same time, BYD Auto continuously expanded its research and development centers , at which around 10,000 scientists now work at four locations.

In a second phase, this promoted the transition to completely new developments. The result was innovative vehicles such as the BYD F3DM as China's first hybrid vehicle , the successor model BYD Qin and the BYD e6 , an electric car that is mainly used as a taxi around the world.

In 2010 over 500,000 vehicles were already produced.

The globally marketed BYD ebus is also used in regular scheduled services in Europe, for example in the Netherlands (35 buses in Amsterdam-Schiphol) and in London (two lines with 51 battery buses). BYD Auto thus provides the largest electric bus fleets in Europe. A total of 50,000 electric buses had been manufactured by January 2019.

In a report on the future of the automotive industry, the Office for Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag confirmed that BYD Auto has a high degree of integration and a high level of added value in the field of battery production necessary for electric vehicles.

On March 29, 2012, the company received a safety certificate from TÜV Rheinland for the charging systems of its BYD ebus and BYD e6 electric vehicles , which simplifies the marketing of these products on the European and American markets.

In the same year BYD expanded its business area to include the production of forklifts and pallet trucks . On a newly developed site in the Shaoguan industrial park , a 100,000 m 2 factory with production capacities for 50,000 vehicles per year was built. 2016, the company received on the leading trade fair CeMAT in Hanover from the under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy related IFOY Award awarded "World Best truck of the year".

2014, the company expanded its range of electric vehicles to electric truck T5 and T7, and the world's first electric tractor T9. BYD electric trucks have been used in large numbers as large sweepers to clean the streets of the Chinese capital Beijing since September 2016 .

Companies in the field of battery technology have an innovation advantage in the development of new electric vehicles compared to traditional automotive groups, which tend to stick to the improvement of the conventional combustion engine and the drive train (gearbox, clutch, exhaust emission reduction) (which does not exist in electric vehicles ). In the first half of 2016, the company multiplied profits by 384  % .

At the beginning of May 2020, the company announced that it would sell vehicles in Europe in 2020. The BYD Tang is to be launched on the Norwegian market, which is one of the world's leading electric cars .

Production sites

BYD Auto has eight production sites worldwide: Xi'an , Shangluo , Shaoguan , Shenzhen , Lancaster (California) , Sriperumbudur , Komárom and Allonne . Electric trucks and the BYD ebus are manufactured in the Californian city of Lancaster . Together with the Alexander Dennis company , battery buses for the British market are manufactured in the Scottish city of Falkirk . The company's first automobile plant on the European continent opened in the Hungarian city of Komárom in spring 2017. Initially an annual assembly of 200 electric buses and electric forklifts is planned. After expansion, electric trucks are also to be manufactured for the European market. The plant is run as a subsidiary under the name BYD Electric Bus & Truck Hungary Kft .

Green City Solution

The Green City Solution concept developed by the company is a calculation-based draft of a plan to electrify local transport in cities. The buses and taxis (with diesel or gasoline engines) used so far are to be replaced by purely electrically powered vehicles ( BYD e6 and BYD ebus ). Thanks to this concept, BYD took 8th place in a ranking of the Boston Consulting Group in 2010 , in which the most innovative companies in the world were recognized.

Large Chinese cities are polluted with considerable air pollution, which is also caused by growing motorization. According to the concept, there are over 30 million passenger cars in China today, including around 1.2 million taxis and around 500,000 buses. The company therefore sees great savings potential in these vehicles in terms of fuel consumption and the emissions produced. If all taxis and buses in China were to be replaced by electric vehicles, this would (according to this concept) have the same effect as converting 27 million conventional passenger cars with internal combustion engines to electric cars.

The Green City Solution concept not only aims to reduce CO 2 emissions through the use of electric vehicles. Rather, the required electricity is to be generated by solar and wind power plants (owned by the company), stored in BYD battery storage power plants and transferred to a network of charging stations to be set up in the cities. The Group's study assumes that these measures will reduce both urban pollution and the operating costs of buses and taxis by around a third.

Green City Solution fits in with government-initiated modernization campaigns aimed at replacing diesel-powered city buses with electric buses. Industry experts assume an annual domestic demand of 50,000 to 150,000 vehicles of this type. In addition, in 2009 the government passed an economic plan backed by subsidies, according to which the People's Republic is to become the global market leader for buses with electric drives.
