Sriperumbudur ( Tamil : ஸ்ரீபெரும்புதூர் Srīperumputūr [ sɾiːpeɾɯmbud̪uːr ]) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 25,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Sriperumbudur is about 40 kilometers west of Chennai (Madras), the capital of Tamil Nadu. The city is the capital of the Taluk Sriperumbudur in the Kanchipuram district . National Highway 4 runs through Sriperumbudur from Chennai via Bengaluru to Mumbai .

The famous Hindu philosopher Ramanuja was born in Sriperumbudur in the 11th century . In addition, Sriperumbudur is the place of death of Rajiv Gandhi : On May 21, 1991, the former Indian Prime Minister was murdered by a suicide bomber allegedly belonging to the LTTE during an election campaign event before the parliamentary elections in India in 1991 . There is now a memorial at the site of the attack.

Sriperumbudur is designated as a special economic zone and, thanks to its proximity to the metropolis of Chennai and its good transport links, has experienced an economic boom since the turn of the millennium. The start was made by the car manufacturer Hyundai , which opened a factory in Sriperumbudur in 1999. Electronics manufacturers Samsung and Nokia followed in the next few years . Due to the economic upturn, the population is growing rapidly: In 2001 the population was around 16,000, but in 2011 it was already around 25,000. It had grown by 55 percent within ten years.

Ninety percent of the residents of Sriperumbudur are Hindus , five percent each are Christians and Muslims . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 96 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
