Company history

Hainan Auto Stamping Factory was established in 1989 at the latest. A source states in 1988. Similar traditional company names are Hainan Motor Stamping Plant and Hainan Automobile Stamping Parts Factory . The seat is in Haikou . Initially it was active as an automotive supplier . In 1988, factory facilities were taken over from Ford Philippines to manufacture vehicles themselves.

In 1989 this company entered into cooperation with the government of Hainan Province . As a result, the company's name was changed to Hainan Automobile Works . There is also the short form Hainan Auto Works and the company name Hainan Automobile Manufacturing Factory . Automobile production began in either 1988, 1990 or 1991. The brand name was Hainan . A source gives the name Hainan Motor Works for September 1990 .

In February 1992 there was a joint venture with Mazda. As a result, the previous company was renamed Hainan Mazda Motor Company . A source states that Hainan held 75% and its two Japanese partners Mazda and Itochu the remaining 25%. The problem turned out to be that new cars were only allowed to be registered in Hainan Province.

In 1997, an agreement was reached between the China FAW Group and the Hainan Provincial Region. As a result, FAW bought the company in 1998 and renamed it FAW Hainan Auto Works . Different company names are FAW Hainan Motor and FAW Hainan Automobile. Now the vehicles could be sold nationwide.

The Hainan Automobile Group also exists . Because this group signed a new agreement in 2004 with the FAW and Hainan's government. Now the group and FAW each held 49% of the shares and the provincial government the remaining 2%. In this context, too, the name was changed again. The new company is called FAW Haima Automobile Company . One of the goals was to keep the connection with Mazda.

In 2006 Mazda had to give up the cooperation because the Chinese government only allowed Mazda two domestic partners, Mazda had three with Chongqing Changan Automobile Company , FAW and Hainan. Since then the vehicles have been sold as Haima .
