A new car is a motor vehicle , usually a passenger car . As a rule, new cars are sold by dealerships that have signed a contract with a car manufacturer (so-called branded dealerships or authorized dealers ). Buyers will find what they are looking for in local car dealerships or online vehicle markets. Around 40 percent of the buyers are private customers.

definition

The new car is only classified as brand new in Germany if:

  • no more than 12 months have passed between production and purchase;
  • he has no damage to the stand (even if it has been repaired);
  • he has not yet driven in traffic;
  • the model is still manufactured unchanged.

A vehicle is only brand new if the model in question continues to be built unchanged and if the vehicle is standing around between production and sale (regardless of whether it is at the manufacturer or the dealer) no defects have occurred.

Unused and at the same time is a new vehicle if it five days allowed was without it was used on the road. On the other hand, an unused vehicle that has been stored for more than 12 months is no longer a new vehicle due to its depreciation and the condition of the vehicle, even if it is stored optimally.

Jurisprudence

Quoted in the Higher Regional Court Vienna , September 2008, with references a. a. to the German Federal Court of Justice :

  • “When a new car is sold by a motor vehicle dealer, there is usually an implied assurance that the vehicle sold is brand new (BGH NJW 1980, 1097; BGH NJW 1980, 2127; BGH ZVR 2001, 102). In addition, this property can be assumed to be common in a new car (cf. 1 Ob 555/94 = ecolex 1994, 754). "
  • "New car and brand new are therefore essentially synonyms ..."
  • "The mere fact that there is a period of time between the production of a motor vehicle and the handover to the first buyer does not make a previously unused vehicle brand new (cf. BGH VII ZR 227/02 = ZVR-LS 2004/24)."
  • "The property of a technical device as brand new is therefore basically not lost due to a downtime as long as it has not yet been used to reduce its value (1 Ob 555/94 = ecolex 1994, 754)."
  • “Especially in the fast-moving and innovative automotive industry, it must be taken into account that the respective models are constantly being further developed. With the specific definition of the still "harmless" standing time, the first judgment was based on the relevant Ö-Norm V 5021. "
  • "According to this Austrian standard, a vehicle is no longer to be regarded as brand new that is older than 11 or 13 months at the time of delivery (depending on the place of manufacture)."

Vehicle transfer of a new car

Vehicles that were only driven to transfer the vehicle and not driven more than 1,000 kilometers are also considered new.

Daily admission

So-called daily registrations are a special form of new vehicles. They are also new cars, but have been registered for a day so that the dealer can give them higher discounts. This makes them a used car . This gives the buyer the opportunity to purchase an (almost) new car at a lower price.

New EU vehicles

As an EU new car vehicles are referred to that imported from the country of production to the destination country within the EU and then again re-imported are. There are no customs duties within the EU. Often they are new cars produced in Germany that are exported to other EU countries and then re-imported. Compared to a new car, you can save money when buying a new EU car, as the taxes on the net sales price can vary greatly from country to country. However, the taxes only apply where the vehicle is registered and driven. However, the vehicles are produced for the respective, originally intended target market, so that equipment features can sometimes differ significantly from those customary in Germany.

Warehouse vehicle

So-called warehouse vehicles are not produced as a specific end customer order, but with equipment that is supposed to appeal to many potential buyers. These vehicles are sometimes on the car dealer's yard for years before they are sold. Logistics service providers also usually have parking spaces that are used for the interim storage of vehicles. Although they were never registered for sale when they were sold, they may not be designated as new vehicles if the storage period exceeds 12 months from production .
Storage vehicles are usually owned by the manufacturer until they are sold. The sense of "stockpiling" production is, on the one hand, to utilize the production to a reasonable extent and, on the other hand, to be able to serve the wishes of customers who cannot or do not want to wait for the often considerable delivery time for new vehicles, for example due to an accident.

New car buyer data

According to a study published by Ferdinand Dudenhöffer on August 25, 2013 by the CAR Center Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen , the average age of a new car buyer in Germany was 52.4 years. The institute evaluated the new registrations for private individuals from the beginning of January to the end of July 2013. In 1995 the average age was 46.1 years. The institute sees demographic change in Germany , the increasing loss of importance of the car as a prestige object among younger people in the big cities and the lack of aesthetics of new cars for younger buyers as the main reasons for this .

Age structure of private new car buyers in 2013
Age of the person Percentage
18 to 30 years 06.9%
31 to 59 years 46.0%
60 to 69 years 33.0%
70 years and older 14.1%

Inside smell of new cars

The typical interior odor of a new car is very noticeable and is generally pleasant to the driver and front passenger. The air in new cars contains a mixture of around 100 volatile compounds, including branched and unbranched alkanes , alcohols , aromatics , ethers , glycols and ketones . In terms of quantity, the solvents butanone and toluene , which outgas for a long time, are leading , as are plasticizers (e.g. diethylhexyl phthalate and formaldehyde ). Additional substances are, for example, texanol diisobutyrate , N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and 1-butoxy-2-propanol . Other substances can be compiled by odor designers for the type of car. Processing real leather in a new car can cause additional odors.
