history

Today's Gymnasium Brake was founded on May 6th, 1863 as a "Higher Citizens School". At that time, 83 students were attending the school.

From 1907 to 1912 the principle of co-education was enforced. During this period, the higher middle school, the secondary school and the pre-school were under one roof. On August 9, 1910, the new building for the higher citizen school in Kirchenstraße was inaugurated. The building, which cost 173,579.00 marks, was built by the architect Heinrich Behrens from Bremen . In 1922, the students passed the Abitur for the first time . At this point the school is recognized as a full institution. It was given the name "Municipal High School in Brake".

English became the first foreign language in 1923 and 1924, and French has been the second foreign language ever since. Before the Second World War , the Abitur was last held on February 24, 1936. Two years later, Latin was introduced as a second foreign language. As in all of Germany, Jews were no longer allowed to attend German schools in Brake from November 15, 1938.

In 1945 the school was converted into a military hospital . After the end of the war, all but one of the teachers were dismissed from service by the Allies for political reasons . In June 1946 the school was able to return to the premises on Kirchenstrasse. From January 8, 1948, English was taught from the fifth grade. Latin and French were taught separately from the seventh grade onwards.

On April 30, 1957, the name of the school was changed to "Linguistic and mathematical-scientific high school for boys and girls". In view of the increasing number of pupils, the building on Kirchenstrasse no longer offered enough space, which is why the council decided on July 4, 1957 to build a new grammar school.

On August 12, 1969, the new high school building on Philosophenweg was inaugurated. The orientation level and the secondary school south moved into the old building on Kirchenstrasse.

Since November 26, 1979 the school has been called "Gymnasium Brake".

In 1985 a computer room with ten PCs (Olivetti M24) was set up for the first time and a computer science company was founded. Topics in class and in the working group were programming in Turbo Pascal and the development of dBASE databases under MS-DOS 3.x.

In 1988, the 125th anniversary was celebrated with various events. On the occasion of the anniversary, a special issue about the Brake Gymnasium was published.

In March 1997 the first homepage of the Gymnasium Brake went online. All computers have been internet-enabled since 1998.

With the school structure reform in 2004, the number of students at the Gymnasium Brake increased and the building on Philosophenweg no longer offered enough space. Therefore, the upper level was transferred to the former grammar school on Kirchenstrasse. In addition to the rooms in the main building on Philosophenweg and the rooms in Kirchenstraße, some classes have been moved to the Realschule building on Philosophenweg.

On March 31, 2008 the inauguration of the third construction phase took place on the west side of the main building on Philosophenweg. The construction work started in July 2007 comprised the construction of four general classrooms each with around 71 m² of floor space, a teaching material room with around 17 m² of floor space and a hallway with around 145 m² of floor space - a total of around 446 m² of floor space was created. Three of these classrooms are currently used by the fifth grade, one room by a seventh grade. The branch at the Realschule Brake was closed as a result; The Kirchenstrasse branch should also be closed in 2011–2012. In 2015, the last Abitur was written in the Kirchenstraße building, after which the upper school students were housed in the BBZ in Brake and the Kirchenstraße building became a refugee camp.

The construction costs borne by the Wesermarsch district were around EUR 580,000.

Bilingual teaching

Since the 1998/1999 school year there has been a bilingual class in each year. The bilingual lessons take place from the seventh to the tenth grade, every six months in the subjects history and geography in English.

Student exchange

In 1984 an exchange with France took place for the first time. In 1987 there was an exchange of Poles. An English exchange takes place at regular intervals. Since 1966 at the latest, this has been taking place in West Cumbria. In the 2003/2004 school year there was a small exchange with a school in Tallinn / Estonia . The background to this was the eastward expansion of the EU , which took place on May 1, 2004. The participating 10th grade students traveled to Tallinn on April 30, 2004 and experienced the EU expansion live on site. Since 2009 there has been an exchange program for grade 8 with a school on the French island of La Réunion . From 2012 an exchange with the Zhejiang Tiantai High School in China will take place.

Performing game

In 1982 the "Drama Society" was founded, a theater company that was mainly concerned with the rehearsal and performance of English-language comedies (including Arsenic and Old Lace , Charly's Aunt , You can't take it with you ). Since November 20, 1997 there has been the subject of "performing games" from grade 11 onwards. The Brake Gymnasium is thus a pioneer in Lower Saxony when it comes to the subject of "performing games". With this subject, students can replace the subjects of art and music. However, an Abitur examination is not possible in this subject.

With the “Kulturmühle Berne eV”, Berne, the “Performing Game” at the Gymnasium Brake founded the ensemble “Spectaculum”.

Spectaculum has carried out the following public performances so far:
