NIO (Chinese: 蔚 来 汽车; Pinyin: Wèilái qìchē ) is a Chinese start-up based in Shanghai that specializes in the production of electric cars . In 2018, NIO employed more than 5000 people at 19 locations worldwide. In Munich design and brand development center as of May 2017 were employed more than 120 employees from 27 nations with the brand development and design of future products. NIO is also involved in the FIA Formula E championship , the first racing series for monoposti with a purely electric drive.

Company history

NIO was founded by William Li, CEO of the Chinese-language auto magazine BitAuto, and Next EV . Companies such as Tencent , Temasek , Baidu , Sequoia , Lenovo and TPG already invested after the project was presented . The NIO EP9 super sports car with electric drive made its debut in 2016 at the same time as the NIO brand.

In October 2016, NIO received approval from the California authorities (DMV) to test self-driving automobiles on public roads and began test drives.

In May 2018, NIO opened the first "Power Swap Station" in Nanshan (Shenzhen) , where the batteries of the ES8 can be exchanged for charged ones. There is no need to wait while charging.

In August 2018, after selling 481 cars, receiving an additional 15,000 customer orders, and a maximum production capacity of approximately 500,000 vehicles per year, the company filed for an initial public offering of $ 1.8 billion on the New York Stock Exchange .

NIO has Anhui Jianghuai Automobile build its electric cars .

NOK EP9

Nio EP9

The NIO EP9 is a two-seater sports car with an electric mid-engine . It was designed with the participation of the engineers from the NIO Formula E team for use on race tracks. In November 2016, the vehicle made its public debut at London's Saatchi Gallery . The EP9 is driven by four electric motors with an output of 250 kW (340 PS) each, which together give a maximum output of 1000 kW (1360 PS). The torque is transmitted from four gear units to one wheel each, so that the car has permanent all-wheel drive .

To date, six EP9s have been built and sold to NIO investors for $ 1.48 million each.

The NIO ES8 is a 7-seater SUV that was presented in December 2017 and has been produced for the Chinese market since 2018.

The ES8 has a total length of 4978 mm, the wheelbase is 2997 mm. The body and chassis are made entirely of aluminum , and the drive force is transmitted to all four wheels. The vehicle has active air suspension, the ES8 draws its drive energy from a replaceable battery.

Production started at the end of June 2018. In terms of price, the ES8 starts at around 57,000 euros. For the time being, sales will only take place in China.

The NIO ES6 is positioned as a five-seater below the ES8. It is offered with two engine variants of 320 or 400 kW and permanent all-wheel drive. The battery capacity is 84 kWh and enables 510 km according to NEDC . It was presented in December 2018 and the first delivery is planned for June 2019. The ES6 starts at 358,000 yuan (approx. 45,800 euros). For the time being, it will only be available in China.

The NIO EC6 is based on the ES6 and has a flat roof. It should go on sale in China in April 2020.

NIO EVE

In March 2017, the NIO EVE, an autonomous driving concept car, was unveiled at the South By Southwest Festival in Austin , Texas. The series version of the EVE, which can also be controlled manually, is scheduled to go into production in 2020.

Technologies

NOMI

With NOMI , an assistant equipped with artificial intelligence was presented, which can recognize the preferences of the vehicle occupants and then automatically provide the correct or expected information while driving. NOMI is installed in the front and rear of the NIO EVE. Series production is planned for 2020.

Battery swap

Similar to the now insolvent Israeli company Better Place , which wanted to build a nationwide infrastructure for the exchange of traction batteries in several countries , NIO is introducing such an infrastructure.

Motorsport

NIO takes part in the FIA Formula E Championship with a works team. Tom Dillmann and Oliver Turvey were signed up as drivers . The team has been competing since the first season of the 2014/15 racing series , in the debut season the Brazilian Nelson Piquet junior , who started for the team, managed to win the driver's title and two races: the Long Beach ePrix 2015 and the Moscow ePrix 2015 .

Records

With the EP9, NIO has set five records for automobiles with electric drives. The sports car completed record laps on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, the Circuit Paul Ricard , the Circuit of the Americas and on the Shanghai International Circuit . On July 15, 2018, the EP9 became the fastest electric car to conquer the mountain in front of Goodwood House . With a time of 44.32 seconds in the "Final Shoot Out" of the Goodwood Festival of Speed , it was also the fifth fastest official time trial in the 25-year history of the event.
