Baidu ( Chinese  百度 , Pinyin bǎidù ) is a Chinese company that operates the search engine of the same name . A special feature is the ability to search for MP3 files. According to Alexa Internet statistics , Baidu is one of the top three most viewed websites in the world.

Baidu is the market leader in China with a market share of 63 percent in search engines (as of early 2010).

Origin of the company name

The name was inspired by a poem written more than 800 years ago during China's Song Dynasty. The poem compares the search for a retreating beauty amid chaotic glamor with the search for dreams while facing the many obstacles in life. "Hundreds of thousands of times, I looked for you in the chaos / All of a sudden, I happened to turn to where the lights went down, and there she was." Baidu literally means "hundreds of times".

censorship

Baidu's cooperation with the Chinese authorities has repeatedly accused the search engine of participating in state Internet control in the People's Republic of China . Reporters Without Borders accuses the company of systematically filtering “subversive” content.

Baike

Baidu Baike ( Chin.百度 百科 bǎidù bǎikē) is a new area of the search engine, a project to build an encyclopedia similar to Wikipedia . Unlike Wikipedia, only registered members can write or edit articles; Changes must first be approved by a moderator.

Books

Baidu Tushu ( Chinese  百度 图书 , Pinyin bǎidù túshū ) is the equivalent of " Google Books ". Unlike Google Books, Baidu Tushu doesn't have any scanned pages of the books. So you cannot read the book online either in full or in part. This is justified, among other things, with copyright. However, it is pointed out that the books can be read online at various “partners”.

A web address is given for (almost) every book at which the book can be purchased. In most cases these are bookschina.com and wl.cn. Since 2000 there has also been a Chinese page from amazon.com (formerly joyo.cn).

On the page for detailed information you can also find all the bibliographical data of the books, which however differ slightly depending on the provider or are of different size.

Finances

Baidu was founded in 2000 by Robin Li and Eric Xu . The company's headquarters are in Beijing . Baidu went public on August 5, 2005 and is traded under the symbol BIDU. The opening price was $ 67.11. In June 2010, the rate had risen to $ 76.36 after a 10: 1 split. Robin Li and Eric Xu rose to become billionaires. Li ranks 258th on Forbes' list. On the stock exchange, Baidu and Google are advised by Goldman Sachs . In June 2004, Google acquired a two percent stake for $ 5 million, which it sold two years later for just under $ 60 million. Like Google, Baidu is financed through online marketing. Baidu has chosen P4P (Pay for Performance) for this. The client pays based on the return on his investment. For the first quarter of 2010, Baidu's P4P business revenue was $ 189.5 million before tax.
