Baidu Baike ( Chinese 百度 百科 , Pinyin bǎidù bǎikē - "Baidu Encyclopedia") is a Chinese Internet encyclopedia in simplified Chinese script that is operated by the Baidu search engine in China . Baidu Baike benefited from the blocking of Wikipedia in the People's Republic of China and was created as an alternative to Wikipedia . The operator censors the content of the websites.
Content
In addition to the search engine, Baidu Baike has an information tool that is divided into twelve areas: nature, culture, geography, history, life, society, art, personalities, economy, science, sport and current events. Administrators will not allow or remove articles and comments that contain pornographic or violent text or images, advertisements, personal attacks, immoral content, and malicious and senseless content.
history
Baidu Baike started a trial in April 2006. Three weeks after the trial version was introduced, more than 90,000 items were posted in Baidu Baike. As of November 2006, Baike had more articles than Wikipedia in all languages except English. At that time, about 50,000 articles were posted per month.
functionality
Baidu Baike is an open internet encyclopedia that claims to promote equality, collaboration and sharing. With two other services from Baidu, Zhidao and Post , Baike complements the search engine's offering.
The articles are written and edited by registered users. Every processing is controlled by administrators. There is no way for users to contact the administrators. The contributions are rewarded in a point system. Although a trial version was called Baidu WIKI , official press releases and pages on the encyclopedia state that Baidu Baike is not a wiki , the site does not use MediaWiki . However , Baike uses the wiki principle in particular in the content management system . The URL of a search query used until 22 June 2008. The term wiki.
Working method
Baidu Baike strictly applies the Chinese government's censorship regulations . As a result, the rules for posting articles prohibit, among other things, “malicious attacks” on state institutions, as well as posts that damage social and public order, provoke pornographic content or conflicts in connection with minorities, racism, religion and regions.
interface
The visual design is simple. Only bold fonts and hyperlinks are supported in articles.
There is the possibility to edit, comment on, print out articles and view the history of the article.
Processing options
The users can access various tools, among others
- an image system with which images smaller than 2 MB can be included in articles,
- a keyword system called Open Category , with which an article can be provided with five keywords (the system is similar to folksonomy ),
- a separate edit field for sources and external links.
growth
The trial version was released on April 20, 2006. The number of articles exceeded 10,000 articles after two days. In November 2006, the 500,000 article mark was reached.

copyright
Baidu Baike's copyright practice is posted in the Terms of Use section of the Help page. Baike declares that by adding content, the user grants Baidu Baike rights to his original contribution. Compliance with any copyrights is required. Contributions made with material under the Creative Commons or the GNU Free Documentation License must follow the terms of those licenses.
Baidu Baike was sharply criticized from many quarters for “shamelessly copying”. Baidu is the "greatest violator of copyrights to the materials of Wikipedia". Baidu's refusal to remove the “© 2020 Baidu” from every encyclopedic page was also criticized. Since the pages are licensed under Creative Commons or the GNU license for free documentation and are therefore written by volunteer authors, Baidu's participation in copyright law is highly controversial. These copyright violations particularly affect articles on the Chinese-language Wikipedia; Without observing the Wikipedia license conditions, especially those of the GFDL , more than 1800 articles are said to have been copied here. Similar violations of the GFDL were committed when free content was taken over from portals such as Hoodong.com, and the widespread use of plagiarism was repeatedly criticized.
