The United Airlines Holdings, Inc. ( ticker symbol UAL ) was founded in 2010 as a holding company as part of the merger process of the two US carriers United Airlines and Continental Airlines and several subsidiaries and has been the parent company of the products resulting from the merger, United Airlines. The company initially operated as United Continental Holdings , and in 2019 it was renamed United Airlines Holdings .

Companies

United Continental Holdings (UCH) was founded on October 1, 2010 as a result of the merger of United Airlines and Continental Airlines announced on May 3, 2010 . In fact , United took over Continental for approx. 3.2 billion US dollars through a share swap . Measured in terms of passenger kilometers , the result was the largest airline in the world. For the merged airline, the name United Airlines , as a subsidiary of United Continental Holdings, was retained while the name Continental Airlines was given up. On March 3, 2012, the last Continental Airlines flight took place as part of the merging of the two computer systems ; up to that date the two airlines had operated as separate airlines under the same roof . The complete completion of the merger-based integration , e.g. also with regard to the flying staff of the two airlines that were initially still working separately , was finally completed on October 1, 2018. The Company performs the each of the aviation authority FAA awarded Air Operator Certificate of Continental Airlines and the service station certificate ( repair station certificate ) from United Airlines on. The new company logo is a combination of the former UNITED lettering from United Airlines and the globe symbol from Continental Airlines.

United Continental Holdings is the legal successor to UAL Corporation, which was the parent company of United Airlines until 2010. UAL Corporation included the airline United Airlines , the regional association of feeder airlines United Express , the freight division United Cargo and, with United Services, the aircraft maintenance division. Continental Airlines included the airline of the same name, the regional groupings of feeder airlines Continental Express and Continental Connection , the regional airline and subsidiary Continental Micronesia based in Guam , the cargo division Continental Cargo and its own catering company Chelsea Food Services .

The hubs of the merged company are the airports of Chicago , Denver , Houston , Los Angeles , Newark , San Francisco , Washington DC , Guam and Tokyo .

President ( president ) and CEO of United Continental Holdings from 2010 was Jeffrey Smisek, who was CEO of Continental Airlines until the merger. The former CEO of United Airlines, Glenn Tilton, remained Chairman of the Board of Directors of UCH ( chairman of the board ) until the end of 2012 and then moved to a supervisory board function within the board ( non-executive chairman ). At the end of 2012, Smisek also took over the role of chairman. After Smisek stepped down from all offices in early September 2015, United's new CEO Oscar Munoz succeeded him as President, CEO and Chairman of UCH.

The headquarters of United Continental Holdings, like the headquarters of United Airlines at that time, was located in the United Building in Chicago , Illinois . The corporate headquarters of Continental Airlines in Houston was given up on a few remaining departments. The United Building in Chicago was abandoned in mid-July 2013. Since then, the administration of UCH, just like the headquarters of United Airlines ( headquarters ), has been located in the Willis Tower , approx. 1.5 km away , where United's operations center was already rented in 2010 .

On June 27, 2019, the company was renamed United Airlines Holdings.
