The 35th Giro del Trentino was a cycling stage race that took place from April 19-22, 2011. It was held in four stages over a total distance of 528.9 kilometers. The race was part of the UCI Europe Tour 2011 and was classified in category 2.HC for the first time after it had been in category 2.1 in previous years.

Attendees

19 cycling teams started, including seven teams with a “UCI ProTeam” license ( Liquigas-Cannondale , Lampre-ISD , Pro Team Astana , Katjuscha , Team RadioShack , BMC Racing Team , AG2R La Mondiale ) and 10 UCI Professional Continental teams . The other two participating teams - Miche-Guerciotti and D'Angelo & Antenucci-Nippo - were UCI Continental teams . The team Cofidis, le Crédit en Ligne did not take part in the race. There was a dispute with the organizers of the race, who were surprised and disappointed by the withdrawal of the team and wanted to claim the costs incurred with the help of the UCI from Cofidis. However, the team competed in the Amstel Gold Race, which was taking place at the same time .

route

On the first day, the participants expected a 13.4 km individual time trial on a flat stretch from Riva del Garda on the northern shore of Lake Garda to Arco .

The second day led over some mountains, but was still the easiest stage of the Giro del Trentino and offered the opportunity for breakaway groups or sprinters to show up.

The sections on Thursday and Friday were made for climbers. The Trentino participants had to cross the Fai della Paganella (1st category) at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level twice on Thursday. The first mountain arrival ended here and after 33 km it was climbed for the first time. The eleven-kilometer ascent is 7.2 percent steep on average. Three kilometers from the finish, a particularly noxious slope offered the opportunity to start the first attacks on the leader.

The final stage ended at an altitude of 1,500 meters in the ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio , where the Giro has also been a guest several times. The ascent to Madonna di Campiglio had an average of 5.4% gradient over 13.7 kilometers.

Race course

The German Andreas Klöden continued his successful spring after stage wins at Paris-Nice and the Critérium International as well as the overall victory in the Tour of the Basque Country and was able to win the opening time trial. At the intermediate measurement point, Klöden was still behind the later stage runner-up , Adriano Malori , before he was able to gain a second advantage over the Italian thanks to a small climb towards the end.

But on the second part of the day Klöden lost over five minutes to stage winners Thomas Voeckler and Michele Scarponi due to illness and got out of the race the following day. Thus, the Italian from Lampre-ISD took over the overall leader's jersey. Voeckler and Scarponi had broken away from the field in a late attack, with the French sprinting to victory. The first chasing group was 24 seconds behind.

With a lead of three seconds, Fabio Duarte and Tiago Machado secured victory on the third stage, which the Colombian Duarte secured. Scarponi defended the overall lead as third of the day, while fellow favorite Vincenzo Nibali lost over a minute and a half on the final climb.

On the last day with the arrival in Madonna di Campiglio, Scarponi remained in front and clinched his third win of the season ahead of Machado and the surprise third Luca Ascani . A breakaway group won the day with a 24-second lead over the favorites, which Roman Kreuziger from Pro Team Astana finally won.
