The stages

The route was presented on February 1, 2011.

In 2011, the organizers waived the traditional prologue and instead opened the race with a regular stage in the village of Houdan , west of Paris . The first three stages ran over largely flat terrain, then we went into the mountains. The 5th stage comprised seven mountain evaluations. A long time trial over 27 kilometers followed for the first time in 43 years . The seventh part of the day also had a demanding profile with five mountain ratings. As usual, the “ride to the sun” ended with a course around Nice , including the Col d'Eze, before the race ended on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Overall, the long-distance journey was considered more difficult than in previous years.

Final score

For the first time in the history of the Paris-Nice long-distance journey, the "Journey to the Sun" ended with a German double victory. It was Tony Martin of HTC-Highroad his favorite role justice that had been assigned to him after his success at the Volta ao Algarve. He achieved one of his biggest goals of the season and won the third round of his professional career. Like Klöden, winner of the 2000 edition, he celebrated a stage win and was the fourth German to win Paris-Nice. Martin presented himself confidently in the individual time trial as well as in the mountains. But Klöden also showed a good performance with a stage win and a day as the overall leader.

For the German-Australian Heinrich Haussler , the race was also a success. Although he did not win a stage despite several top 10 placements, despite a fall on the penultimate section he was able to win the points classification.

The French drivers celebrated a total of three stage successes thanks to Rémy Di Gregorio from Pro Team Astana , who won his first professional victory, and national champion Thomas Voeckler from Team Europcar , who got the upper hand twice. In addition, Rémi Pauriol was able to win the mountain classification and, as expected, the French were increasingly in breakaway groups.
