Nuits-Saint-Georges is a French commune with 5481 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Côte-d'Or department in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté on the RN 74 between Beaune and Dijon and on the Paris-Marseille railway line . The place is with its 20.50 km² at an altitude between 224 and 516 m above sea level, about 20 kilometers south of the city of Dijon. The municipality borders on the wine-growing community of Vosne-Romanée to the north .
history
There was a first settlement in the Gallo-Roman period, which is proven by finds. Thus dedicatory inscriptions were discovered for the god Segomo .
The place is mentioned as a dépendance of the lords of Vergy as early as 1060 . He received city rights in 1212 and was fortified in 1362. 1870 was Nuits-Saint-Georges scene of a heavy battle between the troops of Général Camille Crémer and the Grand Duke of Baden Division under General Adolf von Glümer .

The Nuits-Saint-Georges wine-growing region is part of the Côte de Nuits , in the Burgundy wine-growing region . Since 1934, the Nuits-Saint-Georges area has had 2 Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short):
- AOC Nuits-Saint-Georges : 165 hectares (ha) of vineyards that are exclusively planted with the red Pinot Noir grape variety . The neighboring municipality of Premeaux-Prissey is also allowed to market 12 hectares under this name.
- AOC Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru : 152 hectares of vineyards, of which 62 hectares in the municipality of Premeaux. Several vintners from Nuits-Saint-Georges own small plots in one of the most famous Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy: the 50.6 hectare Clos de Vougeot , the largest Grand Cru location on the Côte de Nuits . About 7 kilometers from Nuits-Saint-Georges in the mountains are the vineyards of the Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuits . Black currants also grow here for the crème de cassis , an important ingredient for the kir .
