Pommard is a French commune and a wine village with 500 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region , in the Côte-d'Or department . Pommard is about 20 kilometers south of Dijon and borders Volnay to the south and Beaune to the northeast . Pommard is part of the Côte de Beaune . The inhabitants are called Pommardois .

history

Pommard goes back to ancient times . It is said that the name comes from Pomona , the goddess of fruits and gardens, who was worshiped by the first inhabitants. Traces of antiquity, especially numerous imperial coins from the time from Nero to Valentinian I , give evidence of the settlement of this area during Roman rule.

In the 13th century belonged to Pommard Alix de Vergy, wife of Odo III. , Duke of Burgundy. In 1224 and 1240, she donated the district to the Archbishop of Lyon. In the period that followed, Pommard belonged to various nobles and monasteries and was only divided up and allocated to the inhabitants in 1789, the year of the French Revolution.

Pommard wine region

In order to be able to market their wine better, local winemakers founded the Souverain Bailliage de Pommard . The appointments of new members, called enthronement , take place in a festive setting in the cellar of the Pommard parish, combined with a festive dinner.

The Appellation Pommard , ( Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée since September 11, 1936) has 28 Premier Cru sites. Only red wines made from the Pinot noir grape are grown . The yield of red wine for the normal local appellation is limited to 40 hectoliters / hectare. Exceptions allow the yield to be a maximum of 20% higher. The average amount harvested on an area of ​​337 hectares is around 16,000 hl / year.

The minimum alcohol content is 10.5% for the red wine. In the case of artificial enrichment with dry sugar ( chaptalization ), a maximum alcohol content is set, which is 14% for red wine. In the case of a Premier Cru location, the minimum alcohol content is 11%.
