landscape
Not far from the sites of great, famous wines of the Côte, the Canal de Bourgogne meanders in countless loops through a hilly landscape, accompanied by alternating parallel rivers and shady avenues of poplar and plane trees.
Locality
The formerly fortified village ( castrum ) Châteauneuf, which has retained its medieval character, was named after the castle Châteauneuf-en-Auxois , which stands on the sloping western edge of the built-up area. The silhouette of the development is made up of a "nest" of barely countable towers of the castle, the church and the houses of the village rising up over the hilltop. The roofs of the castle and the village, with the exception of the church tower, are all covered with red tiles.
The houses were built from solid natural stone masonry between the 14th and 17th centuries. Some of them have galleries and stair turrets, as well as doors with keel arches and lintels designed by stone masons , which suggests the wealth of the builders and first residents. There are even some houses with real defense towers, in the sense of a “manor house”, a small castle. The builders were usually not farmers and simple craftsmen, but rich wine merchants and merchants from the nearby centers of Beaune and Dijon . They had their weekend houses or summer residences here, protected by their Seneschal and his soldiers in the castle. Even today some houses are used as weekend or retirement homes.
In addition to the castle, the village has preserved some of the remaining walls of its fortifications. In the Middle Ages it was a stage on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela .
Castle
The castle of Châteauneuf towers over the Auxois and, after its construction as a fortress in the 12th century, was intended to militarily secure the plain and the road from Dijon to Autun . The fortification was built for his son at the instigation of the lord of Chaudenay from his own castle, located a little further south, today only ruins exist.
